Or again, what were the conditions of facory workers at the beginning of the last century in the US.

AI is automation, and throughout history automation has often played in favor of the powerful, and against the interests of the weakest.
But the weakest have an extremely powerful instrument by their side:
Public pressure.

I have worked for improving automation all my life.
But automation needs to be regulated so that all can benefit from it.

But we have to make sure the benefits are equally distributed, and the only way to do it is for AI to be recognized as a public good.

@savage309 And then of course, there still arw nearly a billion people out there who live far below the threshold of poverty, and billion others living on the line, often manufacturing goods (or training AIs) for us in the richest parts.

But what did it take for them to get to the poorest, even in the developed world?
Many keep forgetting that the first decades after the first industrial revolution have been one of the worst periods in human history.

Re: this "extinction risk" talk, I think Chomsky said it well:
