I have known President @NelsonRussellM, my dear friend, for many years. In that time, he has endured difficulties of varying degrees. Yet he has provided a remarkable example of how understanding the Atonement of Jesus Christ can bring to us heavenly relief in our trials.
In the just-released “Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Russell M. Nelson,” we are fortunate to learn from these experiences.
He has said:
“Because of the Savior’s sacrifice, we have access to His healing power. He will heal our hearts, give us strength when we are weak, enable us to do things we never could do on our own, and heal us from sin when we repent. The Atonement of Jesus Christ can help us cope with grief, sadness, weakness, fear, anxiety, all of those things that are part of mortality’s trials.
“Life can be overwhelming at times. I remember when my wife Dantzel died suddenly when her heart stopped beating. All my knowledge as a heart surgeon could not save her. Cancer has claimed the lives of two of our daughters. I understand the heartbreak of separation from loved ones.
“But Jesus is the Light that shines in the dark. He is ‘the way, the truth, and the life’ [John 14:6]. He is our anchor when we are desperately in need” (“The Happiest Place on Earth” (devotional in Orlando, Florida, June 9, 2019), unpublished).
I assure you that President Nelson doesn’t just teach these truths; he truly believes and lives them. Like him, let us find peace in our challenges by turning to our Savior Jesus Christ.

One of the virtues I have seen President Russell M. Nelson portray unfailingly is his genuine, heartfelt kindness, which has often led him to leave the ninety and nine to go after the one. I think he must be the kindest man I have ever been associated with—and I have worked with a lot of good people!
In the more than 40 years I have known him, I cannot think of a time that he was unkind, abrupt, rude, or insensitive. It just isn’t in his nature.
I genuinely believe that Russell M. Nelson may be the man for whom the word “gentleman” was created. As we strive to follow the Savior, let us follow the example of President @NelsonRussellM’s Christlike character. #99plus1

I am soon approaching my 100th birthday. One of the places where the Savior used the number 100 in the scriptures was the parable of the lost sheep. Though 99 of his flock were safely by his side, the shepherd went in search of the 1 who was lost.
At age 99, I have no need of physical gifts. But one spiritual offering that would brighten my life is for each of us to reach out to “the one” in our lives who may be feeling lost or alone.
Over the coming months I invite you to consider prayerfully: who do you know who may be discouraged? Who might you need to reconcile with or ask for forgiveness? Has one name been on your mind lately, though you haven’t quite known why? As you bring these questions to the Lord, He will inspire you to know how you can reach out and lift one who needs help.
What a beautiful example the Savior has shown us – that through each of us ministering to just one within our reach, we can spread the love of Jesus Christ throughout the world. #99plus1
