@zenjournalist Not sure if English proficiency is a good metric for education level, I’m sure the English proficiency of the average Japanese is similar - having proficiency in any second language is a better than just one, but what do I know, I’m an American, we speak only American.

What she said is 100% true. The level of English-language ability in Thailand is shockingly low. The 2025 English Proficiency Rankings put Thailand at 116th out of 123 countries surveyed. It is rated "Very Low Proficiency". This is worse than Afghanistan, Myanmar and Iraq. The reason is not because Thais are stupid. It is because the Thai elite have refused to invest properly in education for decades, preferring to spend taxpayer money on the bloated useless military and the parasitical palace. They don't want well-educated citizens who can think for themselves. They want obedient slaves who do what they are told. The situation is so bad that most English teachers in Thailand can't even speak basic English. Instead of nationalistic anger towards somebody who told the truth, Thais should question why their leaders don't want them to be properly educated.

Today marks the 29th anniversary of Dark Horizons, only one more to the big one. Working in this field is more challenging than ever these days, but I still love this job and want to thank everyone who visits - be it regulars, casuals or one-offs - which allows me to keep doing what I do.

The DOJ's civil rights division has become obsessed with helping an angry clarinet player find a symphony job. But as @EggerDC discovers, there might be another side to this story—one involving armed guards.

Mapping the Driftless Area of the north-central United States, a region untouched by four glacial periods The Driftless Area is one of the most distinctive geological regions in the United States. Located in parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois, it remained unglaciated during several major advances of the Pleistocene ice sheets. While surrounding landscapes were reshaped and smoothed by glacial erosion and deposition, this region preserved older valleys and ridgelines that were erased elsewhere. The sequence shown here illustrates how successive ice sheets approached the region from different directions yet did not override it. Each advance altered nearby areas but left the Driftless Area comparatively untouched. As a result, the region retains steep river valleys, deep gorges, and a rugged topography that contrasts sharply with the flatter glaciated terrain around it. The reasons for this avoidance are still the subject of geological research. Variations in ice thickness, direction of flow, and preexisting topography may have influenced how the ice sheets moved. Regardless of the precise mechanisms, the repeated bypassing of this area underscores its importance for understanding pre-glacial landscapes in the Midwest. This interpretation aligns with published geological work, including Reinertsen (1992), which examines glacial advances in relation to the formation of the Driftless Area.

Working late on a big story and a bookshelf where I put books I never read suddenly collapsed and I was hit on the head by “A Tale of Two Kingdoms”, a large hardback volume with a limited edition of 1,500 copies that was published in 1996 to commemorate relations between Denmark and Thailand. I didn’t even remember I owned the book until it nearly killed me.
