@phillyinsider@jrladd I'm curious why Ori Feibush's costs were going up thousands of dollars a week due to his employees' unionization effort. What was he spending that money on? Can you ask?
I teach a course on the cultural psychology of food where I make my students bake bread so they take part in a fifteen thousand year old tradition. But at Reading terminal today I couldn’t help but think how important to have the right tool for the job: here a donut cutter!
@tacosdonmemo Hi there! I'm a reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer hoping to interview you for a story. If you're interested, please email me: jladd@inquirer.com. I'll also try to get to the market tomorrow. (I can't message you because I'm not a paying X member!)
We've got a lot of bangers in the Food section at the old @PhillyInquirer this week. First, here's inside the PA Goldfish cracker factory, where they make 55 million (!) pounds of them a year inquirer.com/food/inq2/gold…
How much would you pay to take a tour of Lynnewood Hall, the 110-room Gilded Age estate in Elkins Park? (Whatever your number, it probably doesn't line up with the asking price.) inquirer.com/real-estate/ly…
Q from a reader: Did/do Philly area schools have soft pretzel days, where kids can buy soft pretzels at or after school? The reader had one at hers but asked if others did too.
We didn't have soft pretzel day at my Central PA high school. Woulda been a lot cooler if we did. 🥨
My dog was found tied to a fence in the snow, a runt I think. We rescued her and yes, it’s a cliche, but she rescued us a bit too. She always gave love. She died, unexpectedly, today.
Dang. Slider’s Grill & Bar, outside Camden Yards, was sold in the fall and has been gutted and painted black. Supposedly will be ready for Orioles opening day (now/then pics)
Hey, do I know anyone who teaches geography in #PHLed and beyond? My colleague is writing a fun Pa. geography story and has a question for someone who's familiar with this sort of thing. Holler if you're interested in chatting!
Hold that gingerbread latte: Philly's Starbuck strike has expanded to five stores this weekend. Workers said the public reception has been overwhelmingly positive. inquirer.com/business/starb…
I was asked to speak to 4th & 5th graders for a Writers Day today. We had to come prepared w/a project from our profession. I usually talk to high school and college students so I was stumped.
Then, I remembered the story of Gritty being accused of punching a kid (a thread).
Surprising takeaway from a recent Q&A: "For as crazy as Pennsylvania liquor laws seem to be, for distilleries, they’re insanely liberal. ... It’s a good idea to be a distillery here." inquirer.com/food/manatawny…
📰 Professional news: I’ve accepted a buyout from Gannett. I’ll end my run as @indystar columnist after Thanksgiving. This has been every bit the dream job I imagined. I’m thankful to editors who gave me the opportunity and, most of all, everyone who read & engaged with my work.
