A thread on trading psychology, addiction to stimulation, and why boredom is the real enemy 1/ Your nervous system evolved for survival — not trading. Trading triggers the sympathetic nervous system: • Fight • Flight • Freeze Adrenaline, cortisol, dopamine flood your body — even when nothing is actually wrong. 2/ Here’s the problem: No event in trading is fundamentally stressful. Stress comes from a learned / reinforced biochemical response, not the chart. Price is neutral. Your body is not. 3/ 90% of trades even with a defined mechanical edge with +EV still lose money and struggle to achieve consistency. What they lack: • Emotional regulation • Nervous system control • Ability to do nothing Execution fails when biology overrides logic. 4/ Over time, you become addicted to stimulation. Drawdown? Cortisol Revenge trade? Dopamine / cortisol Big win? Serotonin Your system now needs more stimulus to feel normal. That’s addiction. 5/ This is why blowing an account stops feeling painful. The 1st time: panic. The 5th time: numb. The 10th time: “whatever.” You’ve desensitized to the stressor — not healed it. 6/ The issue isn’t drawdown or losses. The issue is boredom. When there’s no stimulus, your brain creates one: • Overtrading • Forcing setups • Revenge trades Anything > doing nothing. 7/ You are not addicted to trading. You are addicted to the emotional response trading gives you. Your actions exist to feed your nervous system — not your P&L. 8/ Two paths forward: 1️⃣ Keep chasing stimulation → bigger risk, bigger swings, inevitable failure 2️⃣ De-sensitize yourself to the trigger The second path feels unbearable at first. 9/ The cure is brutal but simple: • Sit with boredom/drawdown/discomfort • Do nothing • Feel nothing • Let the urges pass No trade. No stimulation. No relief. This retrains your nervous system. 10/ When you can sit through inaction: • No setups • No trades • No dopamine …you gain real control. And ironically — that’s when consistency appears. Final thought: You don’t need a new strategy. You need a calmer nervous system.
