@mckennagene@greg_ashman Ideas like this might inadvertently be why boys do worse. Suggesting that girls are inherently more mature and able to focus means that we have lower expectations of boys.
@greg_ashman Based on no data other than being a boy and having kids of both sexes, boys need more exercise, and more tolerance of boys being less mature, because, they are.
Boys consistently underperform girls at school and there is knock-on effect on entry to university. What are the most promising approaches to address this disparity?
@BPhysicswith I've used it for several years and have converted several colleagues to it. Being able to copy to a next time table next year, moving lessons forwards or backwards and adding unexpected days off make it very useful.
I’m an iDoceo user, but find it a bit limiting as I can only use it on my iPad. Have been hearing about Plan Board, as a similar, but more device enabled, platform. Anyone got any experience?? #edutwitter
@quredhealth The Royal Mail delivered on Monday - @quredhealth took 34 hours to check them in. It's Wednesday I sent the test in on Saturday! This is not acceptable you're still refusing to refund.
I'm a married dad of 3. I'm writing a list of all the people I need to buy and wrap Christmas presents for. So far I have my wife, the kids, my parents, her parents and the kids' teachers. Anyone else?
@ChemiSteve Good luck, in my first week of the NQT year we were burning magnesium in crucibles when the lid was lifted a student saw the magnesium was burning grabbed it with some tongs and put it in the waste paper bin.... I'm sure it will all go fine though. 😉
An interesting first week back at school after half term. Looking forward to delivering my first practical lesson next week...and *finally* getting started on some chemistry! 🧪
When the teachers are away, the technicians will play. This is what happens when a boarding house donates its unwanted pool balls!
Looks like we have a new A Level Physics resource in the dept.

@IlikeTurtles809@earthlingpoet@SarahKSilverman@CDCDirector That's based on the current best estimate cdc.gov/coronavirus/20… still means 1 in 18 over 70-80 year olds will die. As my parents fall into this category I'd rather people wear masks. I'm in Tokyo and 99.9% of people I see wear masks, the infection rate is a fraction of the UK.
I bet a buncha those people who have big tantrums over not wanting to wear a mask aren’t assholes they’re just people who are not emotionally equipped to deal with this kind of emergency
@ridwanb Life isn't something you succeed or fail at, it's a journey. You learn something at every step whether it is wonderful or terrible, life will never stay the same. Mine's better for having known you, I'm sure that's true for almost everyone that knows you.
For half of my life, I've felt I should commit suicide, as I generally have a rather "all or nothing" approach to things. Recently that's changed a bit and I try to 'live', but part of me genuinely wonders if that's good or just me settling for less and giving in to cynicism :/
I'm now teaching in an independent school in Japan. Staff and teachers wearing masks at all times except when eating. Disinfecting desks and hands on entering rooms. Generally small enough classes to socially distance by 1m. Very tired of the mask now.
Tomorrow marks a new chapter - I’ll be starting a PGCE in Secondary Science here in Southampton. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a teacher and I cannot wait to get started (at last)!!
@SophieMoston255@lauratsabet Why, the exam is standardised that's the point of it. Otherwise let's just go back to modular exams if you want standardised mid-year tests.
@lowlevelpanic@dave2004b@NhhsRobert@PHoare1963 I will hopefully have started my job teaching in Japan so would love the chance to keep up with chemistry developments while I'm overseas. (Though I might actually be there in person as July falls in summer holidays there)
@lowlevelpanic@dave2004b@NhhsRobert@PHoare1963 Thank you for your hard work organising this. Teaching in isolation can get a little disheartening but hearing from these teachers coming up with solutions to maintain their quality of teaching in the face of lock-down (and beyond) has really inspiring
