SANDF Sounds Alarm Over Missing Border Fence Along South Africa/Botswana Border: Members of the South African National Defence Force deployed under Operation CORONA have warned that the absence of fencing along sections of the South Africa/ Botswana border in the North West is seriously compromising national security. According to officials on the ground, there are areas where no fence exists at all, while in other sections fencing installed by government has allegedly been stolen by local residents and reused to secure private land, kraals and properties. Security personnel say a border without a physical barrier becomes extremely difficult to control, turning territorial lines into open access points rather than secure boundaries. They warned that this creates opportunities for illegal crossings, undocumented movement of people, smuggling, stolen livestock trafficking and other organised cross-border crime. Officials also raised concerns that criminal elements exploit these gaps by operating informal “tax” systems, targeting vulnerable people crossing illegally while depriving the state of lawful control and revenue. Despite these challenges, the SANDF says troops remain active through Operation CORONA, carrying out regular patrols, surveillance and strategic deployments alongside other security agencies to protect the territorial integrity of South Africa. The warning places renewed focus on border management failures, infrastructure neglect and the urgent need for stronger physical barriers, technology and coordinated enforcement along vulnerable sections of the country’s land borders.
