Before she became a familiar face on television, Bea Arthur lived a life that looked very different from Hollywood. She served in the United States Marine Corps , a detail many fans are surprised to learn. Long before her breakout roles as Maude Findlay in All in the Family (1971–79) and Maude (1972–78), or as Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls(1985–92), Arthur had already experienced a demanding military environment. That early service reflected a level of discipline and resilience that would later become part of her commanding presence and sharp comedic style on screen. When the U.S. mobilized for World War II, the government encouraged women to enlist in the military so that more men could be sent overseas. Unlike other branches, the Marine Corps had not yet established a Women’s Reserve. That changed on February 13, 1943, when the Corps released a statement encouraging women to, “Be a Marine… Free a Marine to Fight.” Although some within the Corps expressed skepticism, the initiative received a warm reception from the public. Female recruits were quickly dubbed nicknames like “Glamarines” and “Femarines.” By the end of the war, more than 20,000 women had proudly served in this capacity. With her parents' permission, Bea Arthur - then going by the name Bernice Frankel - enlisted Bea submitted a handwritten letter to prove her dedication to the cause, which read, "I was supposed to start work yesterday, but heard last week that enlistments for women in the Marines were open, so decided the only thing to do was join." She'd hoped to be assigned to ground aviation, but was "willing to get in now and do whatever is desired of me until such time as ground schools are organized." On February 20, 1943, Bea Arthur joined the ranks as Pvt. Frankel. Bea Arthur attended the first Women’s Reservists school at Hunter College in New York, where she completed basic training. She was then assigned to the U.S. Marine headquarters in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a typist. Believing her skills could be put to better use, she requested a transfer to the Motor Transport School at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, which was approved in June 1943. A year into her service, Bea married fellow Marine Pvt. Robert Aurthur and adopted his surname, ensuring it appeared on all official military records. After their divorce, she retained the name, tweaking it slightly to create the stage name we know today. At the conclusion of World War II, Bea Arthur was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
