Six months ago, I made this photograph of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. It was a hot afternoon, around 89–90°F, and the day felt like any other assignment. I was only a few feet from him, and my wife was standing behind me — she often assists me with switching lenses, keeping me organized, or simply keeping me company. None of us could have imagined how the day would unfold. When the incident happened, everything changed in an instant. My first thoughts were her safety, my safety, and then — almost automatically — the responsibility to document what was happening. While trying to keep myself low and holding my wife’s hand, I kept photographing as they rushed Charlie into the car. It’s hard to explain, but in moments like that, something almost instinctive takes over. I’m sure many photojournalists know exactly what I mean. You protect yourself and the people around you, but you also do the job you’re there to do. The first few nights afterward were extremely difficult for both of us. I couldn’t sleep at all. I kept replaying the moment in my mind — seeing him fall back, watching people lift him, and the urgency of getting him into the car. Those scenes stayed with me long after I lowered the camera. I love photographing people. That’s what drives me — being present, observing, and telling the story of a moment through my lens. This work is my passion, and it has shaped me into who I am. Photojournalism is unpredictable. You never know which images will stay with you or become part of someone’s story. You simply document what’s in front of you with honesty and respect. This photograph is one of those moments — a reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can become unforgettable. (Credit Image: © Charles-McClintock Wilson/ZUMA Press Wire)
