One of Inspiring Philosophy’s objections to the argument from divine hiddenness relies on a deep misunderstanding of the argument. I offer correction here: youtu.be/breS8JOHBi8?si…

@doofgeek4011 It also gives explicit permission for engaging in the practice. That’s a step beyond merely assuming and regulating.

@imagnoreligion Terrorizing a tiny, poor rural Virginia school district with lawyers is not a heroic act of defending the constitution, its peak petty tyranny.

@AndrewJRParker I think it’s fine if you don’t want to interact with the argument. I’m not trying to force it on anyone. I’m just not seeing how this is relevant to somebody interested in assessing the argument on its own merits.

@justinschiebs This video of Bill W describing his mystical encounter is worth watching & listening to. Go to 21:44 minutes in. My own story - and my continued scepticism for years - is also relevant here, which I would be happy to discuss in private. youtube.com/watch?v=nNBkgS…

@AndrewJRParker That’s a very human move to make if you feel certain that God exists already. But you should know that this isn’t interacting with the argument. It’s merely bypassing it.

The starting point is not an assumption that God exists. In the example of the OP, Bill Wilson was atheist prior to his life-changing encounter. Same with many other examples. Sometimes we only find out our arguments are unsound AFTER receiving a brute experience. E.g. opening the fridge door to see there is, in fact, milk there, after arguing (on reasonable grounds) that there is no milk. Sometimes (in life) it is a certain form of action that reveals reality to us rather than an analytical argument.

@AndrewJRParker I don’t see how it could change anything unless you’re working under the assumption that God exists and so therefore the philosophical hiddenness problem is unsound. But that’s not very illuminating. It’s just bypassing the arg.

@justinschiebs More the existential problem, i.e. how hiddenness actually becomes broken for individuals in their lives. But when hiddenness is broken (ie. a life changing divine encounter, that withstands critical reason) it changes the way we think about the philosophical problem.

@RealAtheology @justinschiebs I’ve seen this video. Generally speaking, I’d agree. The two books I cited, however, do specifically engage with Shellenberg’s work — would recommend checking them out.

@NathanBozeman2 My arg doesn’t need to take a stand on this particular q. It’s an undercutting defeater, disrupting the notion that all core western values come from xianity because as supporting the worship of other gods - by state or otherwise - is contrary to such preaching and commandments.

@justinschiebs What would the alternative be? I am not trying to misrepresent you, but isn't this a true dichotomy: Christians should not use the state to enforce Christianity, or they should? Is there a middle way that I am missing?
