US smoking prevalence hit a new low in 2024 and here at Juul Labs we are optimistic 2026 will see even more progress in the fight to eliminate combustible cigarettes. In fact, in just ten years, the rate of smoking has declined from 16.8% to 9.9% as e-cigarette use increased.

Juul Labs is proud to announce publication of a new study in the journal Internal and Emergency Medicine comparing rates of complete switching from cigarettes among US adults who used menthol- vs tobacco-flavored JUUL vapor products. The two-year study followed thousands of adults who used JUUL products and found menthol-flavor use was associated with higher switching rates of 52% versus 46% for tobacco flavors. These higher switch rates among menthol users were consistent across a range of analyses that addressed missing data in different ways. These data were among what FDA reviewed prior to authorizing JUUL products last summer, concluding menthol-flavored JUUL products demonstrated an added benefit compared to tobacco-flavored products in facilitating complete switching. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Juul Labs respects the role of @FDAtobacco in making decisions to protect public health. As Michael Fisher explained to @foodanddruglaw today, we encourage the FDA to take steps to clearly define and operationalize the "appropriate for the protection of public health" (APPH) standard to reduce tobacco-related death and disease. By doing so, @US_FDA can improve the regulatory process so adults who smoke have access to an orderly, legal marketplace where they can confidently choose from a wide array of smokefree products to help them transition off of cigarettes.

Switching adults who smoke away from cigarettes is an urgent public health priority that requires a scientifically rigorous and efficient regulatory process to ensure the 28 million Americans who still smoke have access to a range of authorized, high quality, smokefree alternatives. @US_FDA is the ultimate gatekeeper to determine what products are "appropriate for the protection of public health," (APPH) and streamlining the review process to make it more transparent and efficient will provide needed guidance to responsible manufacturers of all sizes.

Ending the smoking epidemic is critical to any effort to Make America Healthy Again. While smoking rates in the US have declined among Americans under age 55, smoking rates for Americans over 55 have remained largely stable for the last 25 years. This group should be a key focus for @US_FDA, which has a significant opportunity to bring rates down across the board.
