Google has laid off at least 12k employees. And now has bought back $140 billion in stock in 12 months. Sharing this in case you had doubts, or hope they might still care about you: the employee. Don’t be a fool, make your money and diversify out of Big Tech.

Rust has strengths, but imo, the added cognitive overhead and syntactic noise of having to deal with things like Rc<RefCell<Box<MyType>>> and borrowing vs mutable borrowing are a huge step backwards in terms of usability. Completely sacrifice ergonomics to please the PLT gods.

Every single notification in this app is someone angry at something. I’ve probably trained the ai to show me these through my interactions, but still, wtf do I still have this app.

This is a part of it, but it also doesn’t have to be. It depends on how ambitious you are, and I think it’s reasonable that if you really want to move up then you have to hustle a bit. But I never played that game, and I’ve done just fine.

@kunchenguid @bengold Half the time "no real impact" is true, but the other half of the time there is actual impact, just harder to measure or not directly a business result. Unlike specifications, impact is blurry.

Now that I no longer work there, I will say that something I really disliked about Google (and this may just be a Big Tech thing and not unique to them) is how much of the job was self promoting and the theatrics of demonstrating impact.

@halvarflake Not in the slightest. They just don’t have a place in most pop music these days as it is a lot less power-ballad, melodic hook driven than when key changes were more in style. Much more use of layering to heighten the energy, due to more EDM influence in pop music.

It is relatively well-documented that fewer and fewer popular songs involve key changes. At the same time, autotune is ubiquituous, and requires choosing a key to tune to. Is the disappearance of key changes just a function of "it makes autotune more work"?
