@EngineeringATX @LBacaj @Joee1131 They also need to retain the employees they didn’t lay off, and giving stock grants is a great way to make leaving less appealing. For that they need stock.

Google has laid off at least 12k employees. And now has bought back $140 billion in stock in 12 months. Sharing this in case you had doubts, or hope they might still care about you: the employee. Don’t be a fool, make your money and diversify out of Big Tech.

@Carnage4Life Why are you still here? Without exaggeration, the only reason I’ve opened this app in the past two weeks and given Elon my engagements is because I get “Dare tweeted” notifications.

Rust has strengths, but imo, the added cognitive overhead and syntactic noise of having to deal with things like Rc<RefCell<Box<MyType>>> and borrowing vs mutable borrowing are a huge step backwards in terms of usability. Completely sacrifice ergonomics to please the PLT gods.

@Carnage4Life What’s super cool is that lots of people that don’t work at Twitter can speak confidently to why those are in there. Elon comes up in code and suddenly thousands of thought leaders know how to read Python. It’s a miracle, I tell ya.

@OrinKerr I’m curious how many other’s morality the average person thinks they have a thorough read on. For me it’s maybe a couple dozen… how does one extrapolate from that…

Do you think you are more moral than the typical person, less moral, or about the same?

Every single notification in this app is someone angry at something. I’ve probably trained the ai to show me these through my interactions, but still, wtf do I still have this app.

@dangoodin001 I still open this app occasionally and log those sweet, sweet ad impressions because people I admire, such as yourself, still post interesting things here. Just sayin’.

@krassenstein Better than what? Taking some satisfaction that a person who had indirectly hurt millions of people is suffering a bit? Why do we think it’s civilized to distance the people in power from the consequences of their actions?

BREAKING: The 81-year-old Kentucky Senator, Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized after tripping and falling at a dinner at the Waldorf Astoria. Currently his condition is unknown. I just want to address this... I see a lot of people attacking him, almost cheering his injury on. I actually see this from the left and the right. If you are one of these people, you are disgusting. We can all disagree with each other. Cheering on an elderly man getting hurt only shows how much of a jacka$$ you are. Be Better than that!

Have you wanted to understand how RL enabled incorporating human feedback into ChatGPT? Then stay tuned, next week I'm releasing a video that explains it with artistic precision. 👀

This is a part of it, but it also doesn’t have to be. It depends on how ambitious you are, and I think it’s reasonable that if you really want to move up then you have to hustle a bit. But I never played that game, and I’ve done just fine.

Now that I no longer work there, I will say that something I really disliked about Google (and this may just be a Big Tech thing and not unique to them) is how much of the job was self promoting and the theatrics of demonstrating impact.

@towheretobegin @kunchenguid @bengold So half the time the impact isn’t measurable and has no direct business result and tech is fundamentally broken because companies don’t just recognize this immeasurable impact without engineers having to make a case for why it’s important. Got it.

@kunchenguid @bengold Half the time "no real impact" is true, but the other half of the time there is actual impact, just harder to measure or not directly a business result. Unlike specifications, impact is blurry.

@jwf @parrots This, but unironically. 40%/yr for someone like Tim Cook has effectively no impact on his lifestyle. For normal folk it's a big deal.

I know I sound like a fanboy, but… Cook taking a 40% pay cut while everyone else is laying off? Respect.

Elon Musk knows intimate health details of all his cousins. It’s just a fact. Everyone who knows someone who had a bad vaccine reaction knew exactly the state of their health prior to the vaccine. Obviously.

@halvarflake Not in the slightest. They just don’t have a place in most pop music these days as it is a lot less power-ballad, melodic hook driven than when key changes were more in style. Much more use of layering to heighten the energy, due to more EDM influence in pop music.

It is relatively well-documented that fewer and fewer popular songs involve key changes. At the same time, autotune is ubiquituous, and requires choosing a key to tune to. Is the disappearance of key changes just a function of "it makes autotune more work"?
