Things normally turn on a sixpence with head and neck cancer. I've been fighting off a jaw infection for the last 48 hours, but it has now dug its heels in good and proper, and my face looks like half of Wallace from Wallace and Gromit! This is all related to bone death and complications from radiation, and it is something that I have to live with. Selfies have, therefore, been suspended until the invaders have been brought to heel!

28 July 1942 | A transport of 1,010 Jews deported from #Westerbork camp in the German-occupied Netherlands arrived at #Auschwitz. SS doctors sent 473 men & 315 women to the camp. The remaining 222 people were murdered in a gas chamber. One of them was Esther Polack. She was 5.

20 May 1928 | Polish Jew, Icek Alterman, was born in Ożarów. Survivor of Bliżyn (sub-camp of Majdanek), Auschwitz and Buchenwald. From Buchenwald he was transported to Theresienstadt. He was still on the wagons when the Soviet army liberated them. He was the only member of his immediate family to survive the war. Icek was one of The Boys transported to Windermere in August 1945 for recuperation and rehabilitation. From there he went to Manchester, where he is still living. On May 20, 2023 he turned 95. Happy birthday.

My father married Esther Sledzik in the Bedzin Ghetto during the Nazi occupation on May 10, 1940. Just over 2 years later on August 14, 1942, Esther and their 2 daughters Laja and Jenta were rounded up with others and sent in freight cars to Auschwitz where they were gassed.

#OTD in 1921 Sophie Scholl was born. A member of the anti Nazi resistance group, The White Rose, Sophie, along with brother Hans & Christoph Probst, was convicted of high treason in Feb 1943, for distributing anti-war leaflets. They were executed by guillotine. Sophie was 22.
