As we look forward a few days(!) from today for the @NASAArtemis II launch, you will hear a lot about the mission, the architecture, the orbital trajectory, & more, but … Have you wondered why there are Four (4) Astronauts on-board and how/when this decision was made? We know during the Apollo program, 3 Astronauts were part of the crew, with 2 landing on the surface & 1 remaining behind in the command module. So, why not stick with just 3? Good question, & it may not be what you think. Interestingly, the original decision to carry 4 astronauts traces directly back over 21 years ago to the @NASA 2005 Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS), which created the Constellation program which was the direct predecessor to the current Artemis program which was created after Constellation was cancelled. As I mentioned, for Apollo missions, @NASA choose 3 crew total, but for Constellation, @NASA wanted more capability & flexibility for longer stays, more science, & with an eye on the potential for future outposts For ESAS, they sized the crew capsule Orion (which back then was called the Crew Exploration Vehicle) for 4 crew on lunar missions (& up to 6 for ISS trips) Incidentally, this also matched the (then) Altair lunar lander design (see illustration), which was built to carry all 4 down to the surface. The intent was to have crews work in rotating pairs on the surface, with 2 doing EVAs (moonwalks) while the other 2 supported from the lander/habitat/base, & this was meant to double surface productivity well more than what was possible during Apollo. Also, 2 crew outside on the surface was desired because this allowed for mutual support in case of emergency So, why did @NASA keep the crew complement at 4 Astronauts & not some other number? This choice was determined as the best overall mission balance. The Orion capsule design offered more room than Apollo’s capsule (~50–60% extra habitable volume), enough life support for 21 days in deep space, & operational flexibility without making the spacecraft too heavy or expensive Fast forward a few years to 2009, @NASA standardized the 4 crew across the board with the objective to simplify, cut costs, & speed up the schedule (yes, you read that right … that decision to speed up the schedule really didn’t work out well, did it, or staying on budget either, to be honest) Shortly afterwards, the Constellation program was canceled in 2010. The Orion capsule survived the cancellation & became the core of the new Artemis program. This carried over the same vehicle & by default, the same 4-person design. Now in 2026, after many delays, cost-overruns, & other issues like with the Orion heat shield performance during Artemis I in 2022), Artemis II is a few days away from launching … finally! Because of decisions made over 21 years ago for a mission architecture that has changed significantly, for now, the crew complement for the Artemis program (using the now legacy Orion capsule) continues to be set at 4 Astronauts With all the changes in the Artemis program mentioned by @rookisaacman during the @NASA Ignition event, beginning with Artemis III in 2027, this decision may finally change. I say this mainly because the original rationale for 4 Astronauts & the use of the Orion capsule to take 4 crew to the lunar surface may no longer be valid. This is because of major changes in the objectives of the Artemis program & because of the incorporation of new landing systems like @SpaceX HLS variant of the Starship and @blueorigin Lunar Lander designs, both of which (& potentially others that may develop over time) can carry a much different complement of crew. So, why 4 Astronauts on Artemis II … now you know when this decision was made & why this may not be the standard crew complement in the future. @Ellieinspace
