Computational genomics 2019 is done! Next year we will be here @cshlcourses December 2nd - 9th. Come learn the how and why of computational genomics and analyze your own data! Thanks to all the students and lecturers for another great course!

@DNAstack @bffo If those are the terms why not just release the data as CC-BY in the first place?

@bffo @jxtx Yes, we have received approval as (1) we are sharing derivative data, (2) attributing the source, and (3) disallowing reconstruction of raw data through our terms and technical barriers. The intent is to enable discovery of data in great resources like GISAID.

Today we are launching the COVID-19 Beacon, a public search engine for mutations found in the genomes of viruses, mapped to evolutionary and geographic origins. This is the first of more tools we will give researchers in their fight against the virus. ow.ly/m01b50yQDKX

@jxtx @nextstrain These are not onerous, they are flawed, irresponsible, and very very bad ... why do people submit there? Do I need to get back on my “submit to ena/GenBank/DDBJ” bandwagon again? I thought I was done with that?(I thought everybody already knew that???)

I don’t think people are digesting the fact that our President did NOTHING to stop coronavirus and is now saying 200,000 deaths would be a success. It arrived in South Korea ON THE SAME FUCKING DAY as the US, they took it very seriously and in total only *158* people have died.

new @biorRxiv paper from @JenniferLu717 showing how Kraken2 and Braken are 100s of times faster (!) and just as accurate as the leading system for 16S metagenomics analysis.
Jen Lu@JenniferLu717

Checkout my new paper on #bioRxiv, showing how Kraken 2 (and Bracken) are much faster/more accurate than Qiime2 at 16S analysis :) "Ultrafast and accurate 16S microbial community analysis using Kraken 2" biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… @StevenSalzberg1

Very briefly, the reason why "the richest country on Earth" is having critical shortages of crucial medical equipment is the same reason why it's so rich - because "the country" isn't what's rich. It's just the rich that are rich. And they got there by plundering the world.

I am happy @arambaut clarified this point. We are also examining the genome specifically for evidence of changes that have any indication of possibly being selected, and so far there is very little evidence of that, from >2000 genomes

*asteroid approaches* SCIENTISTS: If we don't stop this, it will destroy Earth. PEOPLE: Oh no. How many people has it killed so far? SCIENTISTS: None yet. PEOPLE, SUDDENLY ARMED WITH STATISTICS: Why, that's fewer than traffic accidents! Fewer than vending machines! Fewer than
