I have a deep respect for Ashley but disagree on 3 fundamental points on his @ForeignAffairs article. India like every other nation state decides its foreign policy based on national interest. India’s national interest dictates that it has a firm footed policy to deal with China, which it has adopted and continues to do so. Second, India-US relations are multifaceted and Biden administration’s investment of political and strategic capital are not based singularly on containing China but that on a wider economic canvas. Indian Government under PM Vajpayee said no to US’s request to send troops to Iraq. India will never become a client state but there is a well defined trajectory for Indo-US cooperation that shouldn’t rule out logistical support to deal with the Chinese threat to both democracies. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Ashley Tellis @ForeignAffairs “US should certainly help India to the degree compatible w/ American interests. But it should harbor no illusions that its support, no matter how generous, will entice India to join it in any military coalition against China. The relationship w/ India is fundamentally unlike those that the US enjoys with its allies. The Biden administration should recognize this reality rather than try to alter it.”

Looks like that the institution to be used this time is the @ECP_Pakistan vs the judiciary. Interestingly, instead of learning an institutionalized method to push the army back, its the army that is using one civilian institution after another to kill democracy
