Very important point! Assam is a relatively casteless society (compared to the rest of India) and its politics reflects that.

@Sanskrita_B Assam has two issues- welfare/development along with tough action against illegal immigrants. It's not Himanta Biswa's pitch. This is what Gopinath Bordoloi, the first CM of Assam from Congress used to talk about too. Prafulla Mahanta & Tarun Gogoi too. Magnitude differs.

In #Assam, more than HBS’s development pitch, it’s his polarising politics that may have worked. Many believe “Axomiya” society is under threat and that only he can save it. Hard not to wonder what BJP 3.0 and HBS 2.0 will mean for already marginalised Bengali Muslims.

@aravind @himantabiswa BJP contested 89 seats in Assam & won 82. With the allies of NDA, the final tally is 102 out of 126 total seats. The sensitive border state has more than 30% population w/ suspected origin from the neighboring country. Himanta Biswa delivered w.r.t security & development & won.

While BJP's amazing win in Bengal has taken all the limelight, what @himantabiswa has done in Assam is no less amazing. He has led his party to an unprecedented and bigger win in-spite of an expected second term anti-incumbency. IMO, this shows when leaders act with an ideology and deliver on their development promises, the voters vote them back. An expected anti-incumbency turns to pro-incumbency.

I usually don’t reveal off-record conversations, but this one is public now. After much prodding, @himantabiswa told me the BJP would win between 88 and 100+. I admit, I found that range a bit odd. On West Bengal, he had said it could be 190+. This is the man who predicted the AAP government in 2013 when nobody else did. Except for the 2024 Jorhat Lok Sabha election, his predictions have always been bang on.

When polls closed in Assam on 9th April, I jot down my thoughts on a piece of paper, like I usually do, on the possible outcome of the #AssamElectionResults2026. A month later, we've done one seat better than the best in a historic blessing by the people. Truly humbled 🙏

Historic verdict in West Bengal. My grandfather, a student of Sisir Mitra back then, had to leave Calcutta because of the Direct Action Day violence in 1946. I hope that the new government led by BJP delivers. There is no excuse anymore to not tackle illegal immigration.

Congress had no positive agenda in Assam. Their only focus was to target Himanta Biswa. They even played politics over the dead body of Zubeen Garg — someone who had opposed illegal immigrants all his life. HBS today has shown that be it upper or lower Assam- he is numero uno.

Really happy for Shri Pradyut Bordoloi too. He is an alumnus of our SIS, JNU. A well deserved victory. He got just 14 days to campaign and was facing a three corner contest. @pradyutbordoloi

Himanta Biswa’s strong leadership on welfare & securing Assam’s identity from illegal immigrants delivered this historic mandate for BJP. His West Bengal campaign contribution was also outstanding. He is now a legit crowd puller nationally for BJP. All the best, @himantabiswa.
