I don't know the details of these systems, how they're used in practice. No one not there does (that's part of the appeal, to some). But I know the narratives + promises of the AI mythology are being used to authorize + give a veneer of computational sophistication to mass death.

The NYT recently asked me to write an article about AI and TESCREALism. I said yes -- but only on the condition that @timnitGebru could coauthor it with me. They said no, then relented and said that we'd now need to submit a pitch -- as if they didn't contact me in the first

NY Times puts out a piece of "who's who" who has worked a decade+ to advance AI that, amazingly, is only men. That's intentional, right? It's legitimately hard to do that. Fwiw, I've worked well over a decade on AI. I actually even won the "decade test of time" award last year...

@longnow Responsibility comes from "response-ability": an ability to respond, a reflection from Bette Adriaanse on how she felt once she had the financial ability and mental bandwidth to respond to issues she felt guilty about. #RadicalSharing @longnow

"When inequality increases, social cohesion lessens and crime rises." Inequalities have been on the rise since the 1970s and affects people on the 'more pleasant' side of the equation, according to Bette Adriaanse at the @longnow "Radical Sharing" panel.

@kellyneuner @abookapart @strangetimespdx @RosenfeldMedia Agreed, but simply being written by women doesn't necessarily mean their books cover those points. Similarly, some books by men may cover such important issues. It comes down to, which is more important - the content or the author's race/gender/etc? Is this about representation?

@infogorp @abookapart @strangetimespdx @RosenfeldMedia Social media platforms, which were designed primarily by white men, didn't consider how harassment might show up or provide controls for that. It's always worthwhile to diversify your sources to get a full picture of the design field (or any field you're interested in!)

@infogorp @abookapart @strangetimespdx @RosenfeldMedia There are a range of different topics covered in the book list. Yes, books written by different people will include different perspectives informed by folks' lived experiences. An example:

@b_haddy @mozillafestival One question I'm thinking about: Profit-driven surveillance tech can create more distance and outsource decision-making to supposedly objective bodies, removing accountability. What might more relational and community-driven approaches look like? #MozFest @mozillafestival

@b_haddy @mozillafestival When might surveillance tech be acceptable? With full accountability measures. Police have to come to them first with an impact analysis and can only use this tech for specific situations, with immediate data deletion and annual reporting. #MozFest @mozillafestival
