For the majority of the fight, we only got to see Katakuri’s frontside and never his back. Looking at the tattoos on his front, we can clearly see that they are prison bars representing the shackles that bind him; he’s unable to express his true self due to the responsibilities and how he has to maintain his image as the unbeatable member of the Big Mom Pirates That is until the end on the fight. Through the whole thing, even when we see a glimpse of his back, the same prison bars are there, but when he took his scarf off he started to do what HE wanted; and that was to fight Luffy. But this time it wasn’t to fight for Big Mom, it was to fight for himself. That’s when he takes off his jacket that bears his family name; quite literally symbolizing the weight of his family’s expectations being thrown to the side. And there we see a new tattoo, a wing; the symbol of freedom. If you noticed, after he threw his jacket to the side his demeanour changed; he started to ENJOY the fight. No longer does he fight for Big Mom, no longer does he need to keep up this facade, no longer does he need carry this mask/burden for being the perfect being for someone else. For the first time in his life, he was able to be himself; he was finally free. That’s also why he was content with losing and purposely fell on his back

I will never get over how Oda told and symbolized all of Katakuri’s character growth through his tattoos
