They started off as ordinary diverse people from across the world who suddenly gained airbending abilities after Harmonic Convergence in Book 2 of legend of Korra which set after 75 years of Avatar the last airbender. So over time the world has evolved and changed and although their teacher “Tenzin” tries to bring back the old ways, they reject it.
