Very excited to announce that we have celebrated our first cohort of #Equality #Advocates @hmpfosseway We believe that small wins, small project, small steps often make huge difference. Eleven Fantastic Equality Advocates celebrated their graduation with family and friends.

Personal News: Unfortunately, my blood cancer has progressed to a stage where I require more intensive treatment, namely long-term low dose chemotherapy or a Cancer Growth Blocker of the JAK2 gene. As a result, I may be less active over the coming months whilst I adjust to the side effects. I am part of the MITHRIDATE clinical trial, which will see me receive either the usual 1st line treatment of Hydroxyurea or what can be a 2nd line treatment; Ruxolitinib. The drug is already used for my condition, but the NHS currently won't pay for it until there's more evidence of its effectiveness due to its cost. This is the stage 3 trial to see if it is more effective giving as a 1st treatment. Stages 1 and 2 showed very positive results. It is hoped that whichever treatment I receive will improve my symptoms and blood results after I adjust, as the last few months have seen me become severely impaired to the point I can't get out of bed. The trial is run and supported by @CR_UK, @MPNVoice, @unibirmingham, The French National Cancer Institute (INCa) with @NovartisCancer providing Ruxolitinib free of charge. NHS Highland's amazing Haematology team is looking after me locally.

Happy International Women’s Day to many fearless worriors I know in the criminal justice sector and to many unheard, unknown, uncompromising sisters across the world. Let’s fight for our dreams, and our dreams will fight for us 💚 #internationalwomensday2024 #iwd2024

Prisons are at capacity - read this report to find out why: ‘The number of people given immediate custodial sentences has fallen from 98,044 in 2012, to 67,812 in 2022. This suggests that the prison population increase is not driven by more convictions.’ post.parliament.uk/research-brief…

The next day @HMP_Humber with @k_tsintsadze to discuss the experiences of ethnic minority prisoners and ways of building better relations with staff. No magic wands but a drive to implement positive change and engaging leadership are key to inclusion for all! #YPG_D&I #ZMT

How is it possible that #HMPPS invested heavily in its dedicated Race Action Programme over the past three years and we still haven’t seen any shift in reducing racial disparity in prisons?! PAVA spray used disproportionately - Russell Webster russellwebster.com/pava-spray-use…

Small steps in the right direction that make our work worthwhile 🙌 You don’t have to wear cape to fight for a better future. Hope is a waking dream indeed and courage is the first step to take. The courage of doing the right thing because it is right. 👏👏👏

I’m on my way to the sixth prison this week: met with some incredible people who live & work there, observed their routine struggles, shared with them the burden of despair and the pressure of finding hope. I’m angry at the silence & ignorance that enables the politics of denial.
