Pakistan’s formula for setting petrol and diesel prices is based on Platt’s average. Which is normally fine, because it moves in tandem with other petroleum indices, such as Arab Light, Brent, etc. But since the beginning of Iran war, Platt’s index for refined petrol and diesel has risen astronomically compared to the various indices of crude oil. So the crack spread of refining margin has become more than the price of oil itself. Last month Pakistan refined 70% of our own diesel and imported 30%. But we priced the locally refined diesel on the price of expensive imported diesel thus giving excessive profits to local refineries (whose cost is much less). This is why the formula is not appropriate anymore and needs to be changed. Ali Pervaiz is a friend and a good person. He shouldn’t have made a personal attack on me. But I won’t engage with it.
