In 2011 journalist Pinki Virani filed a mercy petition in the Supreme Court on her behalf. The court rejected it but for the first time laid down India’s guidelines for passive euthanasia. That legal landmark came entirely from Aruna’s case. She died on May 18 2015 of pneumonia. She was 67 years old. She had spent more years in that bed than she had spent living. The nurses wept.
