Can we also impose sanctions on leaders who neglect the health sector or use taxpayers' money to seek quality healthcare elsewhere? It is easy to threaten frontline staff. It is harder to address chronic underinvestment, poor planning, staff shortages, and hospitals forced to operate beyond capacity. Accountability should not begin and end with the person on duty. It should also reach those who have the power to build a system that actually supports emergency care. If the state fails to provide the basics, then punishing health workers alone is not reform. It is deflection.
