20 years ago today, Roman Arch won the Australian Cup, and it’s one of those horses and stories that just feels stitched into our family.
He was bred by our longtime owner and my godfather, John Playfoot, broken in by Dad at Lyndhurst, and came with us to Sutton Grange when we moved there in 2001. His first city run was actually on Australian Cup Day in 2002 in race 2 over 1400m, ridden by Greg Childs, and later that same year he won on Melbourne Cup Day, again with Greg Childs on board in Race 9. There were glimpses of what he could be and the potential that Dad could see in him, but he started tying up badly (build-up of lactic acid). He just couldn’t switch off, even on slow mornings due to the one track we had to work the horses on at Sutton Grange. Dad grew more and more frustrated because he knew how good he was, but couldn’t quite get him to show it.
In the end, Dad made the call to send him to trainer, Mick Whittle in South Australia, thinking a change and a different approach might help him relax. Mick was unconventional, but it worked… maybe a little too well. Roman was thriving, learning to switch off, and then went and won the Group 1 Toorak Handicap with Luke Currie, might I add, in Melbourne Racing Club colours after the silks were forgotten, which is still one of those stories people remember. I know Dad was gutted watching that, and Mum even more so, because she’d always worried that once he left, we might not get him back. Mick then trained him like a stayer and he was even one of the favourites in the 2004 Adelaide Cup, the same race we ended up winning with Pantani, but eventually his form started to taper off, and Dad worked on John to bring him home.
Roman came home to us. By then we were back at Lyndhurst, and they just went back to basics with him. Off he went to midweek races at Sandown, quietly rebuilding his confidence, race by race. And he came good again. He won races such as , the Werribee Cup and the Sandown Classic, and from there when things within the current sole ownership was tight, Dad and Mum were able to get together a group of wonderful longtime owners such as the Bamford's, the late Jack Fraser, Lorraine McKenna and others, with Dad still training him, all of them buying into the same belief, that he was an Australian Cup horse.
That was the plan, and now Dad had to pull it off.
Acceptances were at 12pm, and somehow something got lost in translation, neither Mum nor Dad had accepted him. Mum ran out to Dad in the stables saying, “Did you accept Roman for the Australian Cup?” and Dad just looked at her… “oh no.” You can imagine the panic. Mum jumped on the phone to Racing Australia, and somehow, unbelievably, they hadn’t filled the field like they expected, so they squeezed him in.
We could all finally exhale.
And then, at 60/1… he won it!!
No pressure, no expectation, just Craig Newitt letting him settle and be himself, and on his day, Roman was unbeatable. This was my first ever memory of being at the races, at the age of 3, probably because of how cathartic the race was from start to finish. The whole journey, bottled into one race. Everyone was screaming, cheering and crying as he was charging home, so I of course thought everyone was angry and took it upon myself to hide underneath the seats in the grandstand and cry, Mum quickly reassured me "it's okay Evie we're not upset, we're happy!!"
He was a big, strong, plain bay, a bit aloof and never one for fuss, but Dad always said from the moment he broke him in, he knew he was good. He reminded Mum and Dad so much of Missrock, a later stable star. They shared the same presence, same toughness, same turn of foot. After racing he was loved by a girl who turned him into a dressage horse, before he sadly passed from illness. Horses like him don’t come around often, not just because of what they win, but because of everything they take you through along the way. Roman Arch was a horse that will always be such a big part of Dad’s story ❤️

🏇 WFA Performance Ratings ⏱️⚖️📊 – Top 5 winners from 29/11/25
💪Here To Shock 100.5 - Ran right up to his career best performances of 101 (G1 NZ BCD Group Sprint in February 2025) and 100.7 (G1 Canterbury Stakes in March 2025). He was ideally suited leading at a slow speed with Mark Zahra gradually winding up the tempo from the 800m, preventing the chasers from making up cheap ground. It was an ideal scenario; he couldn't have been better ridden or better suited, so the figure is very much him at his ceiling. The positive is that he clearly remains capable of producing that level when conditions fall his way.
🏆 Libertad 99.5 - A new peak to win the G1 Winterbottom, edging past his 98.5 from the Victory Stakes in May. He had the race shape to suit, with Jamie Mott making full use of his inside draw to sit just behind the leader Overpass at a soft early tempo to the 600m mark. That 99.5 sits just under the 100 Overpass ran in this race last year and well below the 101.5 from the year before, suggesting Overpass ran a touch below expectations.. Libertad remains a couple of lengths behind the top tier of sprinters at their peaks, but this is a solid platform to continue competing at Group 1 level.
🌟 She's A Hustler 99.5 - Ran a new peak, improving again on her 98.7 from last start. Light Infantry Man set a strong pace in front, making it a genuine staying test, and She's A Hustler stayed the strongest over the final stages. This was her third consecutive peak rating, and she took her record to seven wins from 11 starts. Although five years old, she's still relatively lightly raced for a staying mare, and there's no reason she can't improve a little more in the future.
🕰️Major Beel 98.5 - Wound back the clock with his best rating since September 2024 (98.8) and just 0.5 off his career peak of 99 when winning the G1 ATC Derby in 2023. While suited sitting just off an even tempo, the others had no excuses, given Major Beel ran the best last 200m in the field. He's well placed around Listed and Group 3 level, though he hasn't always been the most consistent type in the past.
💎 Flying For Fun 96.5 - A new peak beyond her previous best of 94.5 and well above her recent consistent form around 93-94. She was heavily backed from $4.40 into $3.40, the shortest price of her career, and justified that support with a decisive win. Fifth-up here and already deep into her prep, there may not be much left in the tank this campaign, but the new peak gives her a solid platform to build on in the future.
⚡️ Yorkshire 96.5 - His first stakes win, narrowly eclipsing the 96 peak he recorded twice in BM 88 grade wins late last campaign. He led throughout and set a solid tempo that gave the chasers every chance, but he was able to hold them off. At the weights, this represents a sound G3 performance, though his handicap mark will now rise accordingly, so he'll need to continue improving to keep winning at this level. With six wins from nine starts and this win showing an upward trajectory, there's no reason to think his best isn't still ahead of him.
