@BrentAWilliams2 One hospital system I worked in made me do a module on “Baby friendly hospital” or something of that nature. As a Critical Care Pulmonologist.

Let me give you my perspective: We are all exhausted by the unfunded mandates and taxes on our time that increase practically monthly, and that are imposed by people that know next to nothing about healthcare.
JAMA@JAMA_current

💬 Viewpoint: Mandatory annual training modules consume millions of physician‑hours each year, yet their largely passive formats may offer limited educational value while contributing to administrative burden and clinician burnout. ja.ma/4vvyvBm

If “The Pitt” was an honest show it would spend 80% of the show with scenes of residents sitting in front of screens staring at Epic.

@chrissyfarr I’d choose medicine again-biased opinion. It has its challenges but still fascinating, intellectually stimulating, and poised for growth with new technology.

No matter what happens in life, you can fundamentally choose one of two mindsets: - victim narrative: ‘I am stuck here in this place I don’t want because XYZ happened to me’ - developer narrative: ‘I have to work a little harder/be a little more creative/do a little more to get to the place I want because XYZ happened to me’ One will improve your position in life. The other will keep you where you’re at. And likely make you less enjoyable to be around. The story you tell yourself about how much control you have over the future is infinitely more important than whatever happened to you in the past.

@nickmmark I’m actually shocked that it’s not $25k for the month. This is 100% greed. A good many if not all academic institutions have lost their way & true purpose unfortunately.

Getting my motorcycle license this week. Dreading the 3 hour Zoom course tonight & decided to share a story, mostly to convince myself to follow through with this. Why would someone who can barely operate a motor vehicle even decide to get a motorcycle license? As always, my reasoning was - do it for the plot. Last summer, after a series of events which are too long to detail here, I found myself alone in Romania for several days. Like any normal person, I wanted to leave Bucharest and get into the mountains so I could play with brown bears. The problem? Traffic in Romania is absolutely terrible. Would take 8+ hours to get to the mountains. The solution? Met an Australian with a motorcycle license who agreed to delay their flight home one day & drive me there on a bike. This cuts the commute from 8 hours to 2. Found a grumpy but helpful old Romanian man with a garage full of motorcycles who would let us use one for ~$200. The outcome? Met a few bears close up. Saw a mama bear with cubs. Explored old soviet era tunnels with a pack of wild dogs. Soaked in the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains from the back of a motorcycle [this is how I imagine a dog feels hanging his head out the window of a car - pure bliss] Got back that night & decided I didn’t want to be at the mercy of finding someone with a motorcycle license next time I find myself in a similar scenario. So, I’m getting my motorcycle license this week. When will I use it? I don’t know. Maybe never. But next time the plot calls for it, I will be ready to go. [including a few pics because any time you share a half decent story on this site, you get accused of making it up]

@smallfieldRVA @chriswithans Incorrect. After 6 years health system employed, 12 years in academic medicine, now Locums ~6 yrs now. My hourly pay isn’t significantly different from “employees” in my specialty. I just have freedom to set my own schedule. I pay for my own healthcare. No benefits or sick days.

@chriswithans They hire locums at a higher rate than they pay regular docs. Remember doctors make up 8% of healthcare spending. Cut salaries to 0 and you save a maximum of 8%. Cut admin to 0 and save 30-50% and docs work more efficiently.

This is why we’ll never get “affordable healthcare” in America. Established, stable non-profit hospital offers $440,000 a year for a doctor and they act like it’s poverty wages. No one’s forcing them to accept but they hate the idea that’s a floor for their earnings.

A sweet Jewish grandmother telephones Mt. Sinai Hospital. She timidly asks, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?" The operator says, “I’ll be glad to help, dear. What’s the name and room number of the patient?” The grandmother, in her weak, tremulous voice says, “Norma Stein, room 302.” The operator replies, “Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse’s station for that room.” After a few minutes, the operator returns to the phone and says, “I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal, and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow." The grandmother says, “Thank you! That’s wonderful! I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.” The operator replies, “You’re more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?” The grandmother says, “No, I’m Norma Stein in room 302. Nobody tells me anything.”

@NASA @NASAKennedy Very excited for this. Grew up in Daytona & remember the early rockets (Apollo) well. Saw the moon landing on TV. Saw the 1st shuttle take off from across the lake. Lived on Merritt Island and watched multiple launches. Hard to have to watch this online working in WY today ☹️
