Been at ESPN a long time - this one was an all timer. Before social media, it was as viral as a story can be. I watched it on a tape in the news room. I couldn’t stop watching his teammates.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

Just saw a video of M*rjorie T*ylor Gr*ene talking to T*cker C*rlson in which she expresses uneasiness that America is not mentioned in the Book of Revelation. She appears to wonder “if the Bible is true, then surely we’d be mentioned right?” Oh Madge. So close, yet so, so far.

BREAKING: Texas State Rep. James Talarico just took down Donald Trump’s Big, Ugly bill in a way we didn’t think was possible. This is incredible.

@kate_holgate @TinaMGLong @RepJasmine They won’t. It’s not retroactive: The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, passed by the U.S. House in April 2025, is not retroactive for voters already registered. It applies to new voter registrations and updates to existing registrations.

Today, we’re voting on what Republicans are calling the “SAVE Act”—but let’s be real, it’s a straight-up voter suppression bill. They are literally trying to make it harder for millions of Americans to exercise their right to vote. I’m voting NO—hell no, actually.

@sarahp825 @TinaMGLong @RepJasmine I'm glad you had the best circumstances. Not everyone does. I worry about the people of North Carolina, many of whom lost everything in Helene. They shouldn't lose the right to register to vote on top of everything else.

I didn’t have to have my divorce decree. My marriage license says my current name (from my first marriage) and my surname and they checked it with the SS system. Took me 1 day since I had already changed my previous documents when I got married and have always made sure they were secure if I needed them.

@BlisterPearl I had to pay $151 for copies of my birth certificate, multiple marriage and divorce decrees PLUS the cost of a passport. It was annoying but not the financial burden that it will be for many women. It took 6 months to get them from NC due to the slowdown from Helene.

If I had to reregister to vote, post SAVE Act, I'd need: a $25 copy of my birth certificate, a $5 copy of my name change, a $3 copy of my marriage license, and an $89 drivers license. OR a $165 passport. Not only is it a poll tax, it's also a pink tax.

@sarahp825 @TinaMGLong @RepJasmine All you have to do is have certified copies of your birth certificate, marriage licenses and divorce decrees if you have multiple marriages/divorces. It cost me $151 and a 7 month wait to get mine. Not every woman can afford that.

@TinaMGLong @RepJasmine All you have to do is take your old ID (if you change your name) and your marriage certificate and get a real ID. It’s very easy. Or you can just decide your laziness outweighs taking your husband’s name and keep your maiden name.

The NIH didn’t just lay off staff - it lost directors leading work on Alzheimer’s, rare diseases, maternal health, and opioids. These aren’t abstract programs - they touch every American family. We’re not just losing talent. We’re losing time, and progress.
