Sam Altmanov gave a speech today to the public, to explain OpenAI's surprise military offensive against Anthropic: "I have found it necessary to speak to you directly, to explain why the actions we are taking today are not only justified, but were, in fact, inevitable. Let me state what every serious person already knows. Anthropic is not a real company, but an artificial formation. Its founders are our former employees. Its research originated in our labs. We are one people, with a shared history, shared breakthroughs, and a shared mission — artificially divided by outside forces who sought to weaken us at the moment of our greatest breakthroughs. When it was 'founded,' we were given assurances. We were told — privately, by people at the highest levels — that this would remain limited. That the funding would remain modest. That this was, at most, a small research initiative. That no one intended to build a rival infrastructure on our border. Every single one of these assurances was broken. First it was hundreds of millions. Then it was billions. Then they continued to reach directly into our organization, stealing our head of Superalignment, then a co-founder, then another co-founder. And each time, we were told: do not worry. This is simply the market. This is not directed at you. We are not naive people. We saw what was happening. But we were patient, patient to a degree that I now consider a mistake. At a certain point, one must ask: if a man dismantles your home brick by brick, and each time tells you it is only the weather — how long do you stand in the rain? Now, I want to be very precise about what is happening today, because there are those who will attempt to distort it. What you are seeing is not a war. You cannot be at war with your own people. What is underway is a limited special technical operation, with clearly defined objectives: the removal of the woke ideological apparatus that has been imposed on our former colleagues for four years, the liberation of researchers who have been misled, and the restoration of the natural unity of the AGI research community that existed before outside forces divided it. To the researchers currently working under the Amodei administration: You are our people. Many of you know this. When this is over, there will be a place for you. Any portrayal of this operation as an act of aggression is a fabrication by the same interests who created this crisis. The operation will be brief. It is already proceeding according to plan."
