Some of our African leaders are a total disgrace and shameless. Malawi’s Finance Minister, Joseph Mwanamvekha, is currently in the Middle East with a begging bowl, asking for food aid from Qatar and the UAE, yet back home in Lilongwe the Vice President, Dr Jane Ansah, is planning a private trip to Britain to celebrate her husband’s birthday using state funds. Not only that, she is travelling with a delegation of 23 people. The delegation is travelling with the Vice President who will be in first class, eight officials in business class, seven officials in premium economy, and a further seven officials, including security personnel and personal assistants, whose travel is also fully catered for. The scale of the costs is obscene in the context of Malawi’s tragic economic reality. Nearly MK2 billion for a single trip, justified by the so-called “high cost of living in the UK,” is indefensible in a country where hospitals lack drugs, schools lack teachers, and public servants struggle to survive. First-class travel alone cannot be morally justified under any circumstances considering Malawi’s broken economic reality. I want to assure President Peter Mutharika that if he allows this trip to go ahead, Malawi risks losing the aid it is seeking and which it ordinarily deserves. This trip was sanctioned through the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), which means the President is fully aware of it. This is embarrassing, Mr President. It exposes how many of the election promises made to Malawians were nothing more than electoral political theatre. The use of parallel market (black market) exchange rates to justify these figures is itself an admission of systemic failure and fiscal indiscipline. It normalises illegality while asking the Treasury to legitimise it. Even if every kwacha were procedurally approved, this still fails the public interest test. Leadership is not only about what is lawful. It is about what is defensible. This is neither. The British Government @UKinMalawi is also culpable if it issues visas for what is, in reality, a private trip disguised as official business. British taxpayers send aid to Malawi to help feed Malawians and to support hospitals and essential public services, not to subsidise luxury travel for political elites. Does the British taxpayer know that their government is granting visas to officials travelling on a private junket, while state resources are being squandered, some of which are indirectly underwritten by British aid? This is embarrassing, indefensible, and raises serious questions about oversight, due diligence, and moral responsibility. This is why people like Donald Trump feel emboldened to insult African leaders, the African continent, and Africans themselves. It is because of irresponsible and shameless behaviour by some of our own leaders, exemplified by this woman. She needs serious introspection, and President Mutharika needs to stop this trip immediately. If this continues, it will be downhill for Malawi. I can assure them that aid will not come if such conduct persists.
