"APPLE DOESN'T SELL YOUR DATA": The Most Brilliant Lie in Tech You've heard it a thousand times. Tim Cook on stage, emphatic and earnest: "We don't sell your data. Period." It's in their ads. It's on their website. It's their primary defense against every privacy criticism. When you question Apple's data practices, fans immediately respond: "But Apple doesn't sell your data!" They're technically right. And that's exactly why it's so brilliant. Let me show you the semantic game Apple is playing and why "we don't sell your data" is one of the most successful marketing lies in tech history. THE CLAIM APPLE MAKES Apple's privacy policy explicitly states: "Apple does not sell your personal data including as 'sale' is defined in Nevada and California." Tim Cook has said repeatedly: "We don't sell your data to third-party advertisers." Their marketing emphasizes this constantly. It's positioned as the fundamental difference between Apple and companies like Google and Facebook. And technically? It's true. Apple does not engage in the direct sale of raw user data to third parties in exchange for money. But here's the thing: neither does Google. Neither does Facebook. Almost no tech company literally "sells" user data in the way that phrase suggests. So why does Apple get credit for not doing something that almost nobody does? Because they've convinced people that "not selling data" means they respect your privacy. And that's where the semantic game begins. WHAT APPLE ACTUALLY DOES WITH YOUR DATA Let's be crystal clear about how Apple monetizes your data without "selling" it: 1. Their Own $5+ Billion Advertising Platform Apple operates a massive advertising business. Apple Search Ads generated over $5 billion in 2024, and it's one of their fastest-growing segments. How does it work? You open the App Store and search for something Apple uses your account information, purchase history, downloads, subscriptions, location, and device data to show you targeted ads Advertisers pay Apple to show you these ads Apple keeps all your data and all the revenue This is exactly what Google and Facebook do. But when Apple does it, they call it "privacy-focused advertising" because they don't use the word "sell." 2. The $15+ Billion Google Deal Here's where it gets really interesting. Apple doesn't sell your data to Google. Instead, they do something arguably worse: they sell you. Apple makes over $15 billion per year from Google in exchange for making Google the default search engine in Safari. Think about what this means: You use Safari because you believe Apple protects your privacy Apple funnels you to Google by default Google collects comprehensive data on your searches Google monetizes your searches through their advertising empire Apple takes a cut without technically "selling" anything Apple positions themselves as the privacy alternative to Google while taking billions to deliver users directly to Google's data collection machine. 3. Data "Sharing" With Partners Apple's privacy policy mentions they "share" data with partners and service providers. This isn't called "selling," but let's examine what actually happens: With developers:When you subscribe to an app, Apple creates a Subscriber ID and shares information about your subscription with the developer. This includes what you purchased, when you purchased it, and subscription status. With service providers:Apple engages third parties to handle data on their behalf. These service providers process your personal information for various purposes. Apple claims these partners are contractually obligated to protect your data, but you have no visibility into who these partners are or what they're doing. With carriers:When you activate your iPhone, Apple shares your information with your carrier. This includes device identifiers and account information. None of this is called "selling." It's all "sharing" or "processing." But your data is moving to third parties for business purposes. The distinction is semantic, not substantive. 4. Monetization Through Ecosystem Lock-In Here's the most sophisticated part: Apple doesn't need to sell your data because they've built a system where owning your data keeps you locked into their ecosystem. Your photos, messages, contacts, purchased apps, music, health data, payment information it's all stored in Apple's ecosystem. The more data they have on you, the harder it is to leave. This data lock-in generates revenue through: Hardware sales (need new iPhone to access your data) iCloud storage subscriptions ($120+ billion in services revenue) App Store commissions (30% of everything) Apple Music, TV+, Arcade, and other subscriptions Your data isn't sold it's used as a retention mechanism that generates far more revenue than selling it ever could. WHY THIS SEMANTIC GAME WORKS Apple has successfully convinced millions of people that "not selling data" equals "respecting privacy. But because Apple don't use the word "sell," they get to position themselves as the privacy-conscious alternative while doing essentially the same thing as Google and Facebook just while charging you $1,200 for the privilege. The semantic game is brilliant. It's allowed Apple to have their cake and eat it too: collect comprehensive data, monetize it aggressively, and still market themselves as privacy-focused. #iOS26 #Apple #iPhone17

This is actually insane. ALL of game dev is ITERATIVE. The idea that NINTENDO has somehow been some golden child company and ONLY used mechanics they came up with (and didn't iterate off others) is insane. What a disgusting and corporate direction to take gaming. Shame on them.

@app_settings @Muatex It is still called bloatware. Does not matter if you can delete it or not. I have a pixel 9 pro it didn't come with any bloat. Most of them are cheap android phones to subside the cost and I think that's okay. Android allows everyone to afford a phone

@helvetiica it looks cleaner because it doesn't show information. Even in your screenshot I don't see those shopping stores. If I have a flight soon and want to grab something from walhburgers I know it's not busy. All this from just a glance. How does apple have a better UI?

Some people are so quick to yell “BUT APPLE MAPS DOESNT WORK” First, my tweet and the quoted tweet were strictly about app design. That said, I get that this was the case when it launched. But for many places, it’s far from the truth now. Any place that has Apple’s self made map, which is many countries, should be good. In fact, many people from outside the US have said they love Apple Maps. Here’s one example: x.com/adrian_tusar/s…
Adrian🇸🇮@adrian_tusar

@DylanMcD8 People say that Apple Maps in Europe is bad. I’m from Slovenia and this simply isn’t the case. Apple has improved their maps so much here. I can easily navigate and find almost everything with AM. I get that in some countries it’s not great but people should give it a second try.

California is running a digital driver's license / ID program, and you can download the app right now. I had my digital DL within a minute. Unfortunately, I am not sure if they are integrating with GPay yet. A separate app called CA DMV Wallet is used. dmv.ca.gov/portal/ca-dmv-…

@flightradar24 idk why they added the Vistara purple. Why not keep the two brands separate? There is a reason they are 2 brands and not one, or they should just merge those brands. Thoughts?
