Chatted with Trevor Vance. He said last night Jac Caglianone asked one of the grounds crew members how many were on the crew (~20). This morning, Cags brought in three-dozen donuts + coffee for them as a thank you for their hard work. First class.

@JoseMontas1 @Enrique_Rojas1 All depends on service time and when they start collecting pension? Players can start early (45) with reduced payments.

Spring training starts, and Rockies 1B Kris Bryant goes on the 60-day IL where he'll be out for at least the first 57 games of the season. Bryant, who played only 11 games last season, has played in 170 games in the first four years of his 7-year, $182 million contract.

Bobby Valentine wears a disguise in the dugout after being thrown out of a game, 1999. Valentine was ejected in the 12th inning, rules prohibit ejected managers or players from remaining in the dugout or having any contact with their team during the game. But Valentine returned to the dugout two innings later wearing sunglasses, a cap pulled low, and a fake mustache. The disguise fooled no one, Valentine later claimed he just came back to tell a joke to lift the team's spirits, but MLB was not amused. He was fined $5,000 and suspended for two games. Though the image lives on.

Milwaukee County Stadium. It was the home for the Milwaukee Braves (1953-1965) and Milwaukee Brewers (1970-2000). It opened in 1953 and was notable as the first Major League ballpark in the United States financed entirely with public funds. Construction began in 1950 on the site of a former landfill, with a cost of about $5.9 million. The ballpark hosted three World Series (1957, 1958, 1982) and was also used part-time by the Green Bay Packers. Did you ever see a game at Milwaukee County Stadium?

"Prior to the 1982 season, Rickey Henderson was earning the league minimum $185,000. Thanks to his impressive performance up to that point, the A's showered Rickey with a huge contract. In the next season his salary would jump to $535,000, followed by $950,000. Best of all, the contract came with a big fat signing bonus. To reward his performance over those first few years, just before the start of the 1982 season the Oakland A's gave Rickey a $1 million signing bonus. A few months after the ink was dry on the contract and the $1million check, someone in the Oakland A's accounting office came across an unusual error in their books. No matter how many times he ran the math, that frustrated Oakland accountant could not figure out why the team's books were off by one million dollars. The discovery of this discrepancy set off a massive investigation until someone finally figured out that the $1 million was related to a single check. A check that had been written to Rickey Henderson four months earlier. So, someone from the accounting office called up Rickey and asked him if he still had the check. Rickey responded: "Ya I have it! I'm staring at right now. It's still in the frame."

It’s not even October yet and it feels like playoff baseball. Noelvi Marte — a third baseman until the middle of this season — with a game-saving home run robbery and the Reds get back to within a half-game of the Mets.

@TheWARmonger_ Also...manager can yell your name or number to let you know pitch. Bobby Valentine would do that when I was with the Mets. Sounds like you are shouting encouraging words but really calling out pitches or location.

Some have protested, and I'll admit I don't know this is exactly what signaling happened here. But Cora clearly sees changeup. The runner on 2nd or just the batter may have seen it on their own as well. I'll stand by the rest of the post, which is really just that tipping is a big part of the modern game, and orgs are dedicating a lot of time, energy, and technology to it.

We've discussed pitch tipping a few times this season, and here's some good video. The coach/analyst gives the pitch to the manager, who sends the pitch to the runner on 2nd base, who sends the pitch to the batter, who hits a grand slam. Pitch tipping is a big part of the modern game. We're all comfortable with a player on base noticing something and relaying to the batter, that's been part of baseball forever. But it's so much more than that now. Advanced scouting, serious technology, and analysts (one player told me their team has three people dedicated to it). Notes: - Pitch tipping has never been considered cheating, and I'm not saying it is - It's NOT just any one team, it's many or all of them. I've been looking for it since last season, and I have at least 6-7 teams who seem to be very good at it - "Just don't tip your pitches" has gotten a lot more difficult in the past handful of years with the technology used to identify tips
Matt McCarthy@MattMcCarthy985

This is a fascinating look at the inner workings of baseball. Looks like Cora guessed/stole the pitch. The signs are probably to the 1B coach, who then relays changeup to the hitter. There’s so much happening on every pitch. The best sport on earth.
