@keith_langdon Calceatus I’d say. Not a Conops because it lacks the long rigid mouthparts. Well spotted.

Is it possible to id this from these photos? Taken today at the base of the cliffs at Charmouth, Dorset. AI on app. suggests Leopoldius calceatus (Dark Waspgrabber), but Conops strigatus (Dark-cheeked Beegrabber) has also been suggested. @StevenFalk1 can you help?

Could this be Radford's Flame Shoulder? Certainly stood out as one to looked at closer. @MOTHIDUK

@ClevedonMoths Fascinating. @JLowenWildlife has made me aware of Spiny as a possibility here (Norwich) at some point. Had this Oak this week that seems to show separated black markings at the wing tips. Just for info.

My current thoughts on Spiny Hook-tip:- 1. Black separated dashes in wing-tip with less oblique angle & reduced darker markings; 2. Colour variable - often darker & sometimes purplish; 3. White wing flash irrelevant; 4. Darker cross-band with straighter edges; & 5. Larger.

Watercress Farm, Nailsea 3rd September. I identified 7 male Hook-tips as 6 Oak & a Spiny. Other than wear, very little variation within the Oaks. Good opportunity for comparison to our local presumed Spiny Hook-tips. Photo session results attached. Gendets will be interesting. 😀

@MOTHIDUK are these both Bactra furfurana? First 3 all the same specimen from today, last pic is one I may have misidentified in 2020!

I'd be interested on opinions on this Rhyacionia (in Norwich). Extreme amounts of orange, on the larger side with a hint of posterior crest, tall & triangular(ish) orange mark before tornus. Just pinicolana or could it be buoliana? All comments welcome @MOTHIDUK @norfolkmoths

Spent a pleasant hour watching 40+ male Gold Swift lekking this afternoon on #Speyside, including this super well marked individual. Has anyone else encountered aberrant males such as this? More typical males in other pics!
