There’s only one question here and it’s not about whether a variance for a parking lot is a good idea (it is not). The question is has the applicant met the high bar for a variance at all, which Becky’s testimony demonstrates they have not. That should be the end of the story.

(10) Literacy can be a tool of consciousness building (that idea did not start with Freire!). What are you doing to strengthen your literacy and that of your community ? Would you be interested in learning more about the pedagogical practices utilized during Freedom Schools?

(9) It’s very useful to the state if you cannot distinguish the literal from the figurative. If you can’t analyze and determine what something appears to be compared to what it truly is.

Couple takes here: (1) literacy is on a spectrum. This video and the responses to it demonstrate the struggles we have as Americans with phonetic reading, comprehension, synthesis, interpretation, and analysis;

Our daughter, Rachel Corrie, was killed in 2003 in Gaza, while trying to protect a Palestinian home facing illegal destruction by the Israeli military. She was 23 years old. The massive, armored Caterpillar D-9 bulldozer that crushed her was operated by two Israeli soldiers and manufactured in the United States.
