@thephdstory Also new faculty here - Something I was told to consider was joining one department committee, one school committee, and one university committee. Diversifying the impact. Not sure if that’s true to all universities or not, but something.

Why don't we have more of this rather than concreting or paving over everything? It soaks up water, has some semblance of life, but won't turn to mud with vehicle or foot-fall use Genuinely, is there a reason? What have I missed?

When choosing a graduate research advisor, do all you can to choose someone who will not only be a great mentor now but who will be there for you throughout your career. You never know where your career will take you and having a mentor as a supporter and advisor is invaluable.

Now that I’m an assistant prof, I feel bad asking my mentors for smaller bits of help. I feel like that’s only allowed for grad students or post docs. 🤔

It’s funny how much focus there is on finishing your PhD when you’re doing it, but then once you’ve finished it, you kind of feel lost. What is your goal(s) for after you finish your PhD? @Academic_Tasks #PhDVoice @PostdocVoice

PhD folks: What's the very first thing you did when you were like, "okay, shit, I need to figure out this whole job thing"? Maybe that was early in your PhD program, mid-way through, or toward the end -- or after! What did you do first?

If you have a degree in a STEM field and could go back and get a different one, what non-STEM subject would you choose?

If you were the type of kid that got excited to buy school supplies at the end of each summer I regret to inform you that you have a PhD now.
