@godfreypy1 @KavithaRatwatte @Kevin57928906 Wonder how much they made from the coal tender scam. Plus how one guy who said his wife told him to get a job because she couldn’t manage with her salary, suddenly built a super luxury 3 storey house within 1 1/2 years of becoming a Minister 🤨

At least the NPP MP’s get official salaries which they deserve as parliamentarians. Not 60 million as commission from airline deals, & 70 mn from Krrish tower projects etc. Which is better ? If Daisy Achchi had her memory good she would hv answered this. Still she may if you ask her. @BimalRathnayake @sunilhandunnet1 #lka

@chami9539 They didn’t become corrupt overnight. People kept electing them over and over again. The current lot is getting there faster than any of the above! Expecting a “change” from the NPP/ JVP who did nothing but destroy and create chaos, is being truly delusional

What an astonishing picture. If anyone needs to know what the hell happened to Sri Lanka that was once the envy of Lee Kuan Yew.. Who aspired to make Singapore like Sri Lanka? Show them this. Generations of failed leadership, demagogues and bastions of corruption and all of them using the cover of saffron robes to do their worst. NPP fucks up and we are saddled with this collection of trashbags once again. Which is why clear thinking Sri Lankans need to hold the NPP to a higher standard... Not wipe thier asses every time they shit themselves. Apologies for the visual. #SriLanka #SystemChangeLK #AccountabilityProjectLK

Electricity rate hike starting April 1st is not a result of a global crisis, but a direct consequence of internal mismanagement and the multi-billion rupee Coal Procurement Scam. While the public is forced to pay up to 25% more, the real 'System Error' lies in the lack of transparency in coal tenders. We are essentially paying a 'Corruption Tax' for a crisis that could have been avoided with competitive bidding and a liberalized energy market. It is time to look beyond the slogans of 'System Change' and demand accountability for the procurement failures that are now being billed to the average citizen.

Had everything gone according to plan, today we’d have had less or no power cuts & stable prices that wouldn’t jump every time oil prices go crazy. Sri Lanka was positioning itself as a green energy hub, not just consuming but exporting. Imagine how much revenue it could bring.

The loss is considerable. And so far, the only losers have been the national coffers, the rate-paying public, and LVP. The fact that Trident continues to provide coal despite a US$ 8.1mn penalty indicates that its margins are likely worth this gentle “slap on the wrist”.

The government says it went for the lowest bid. What's happened now? Trident will provide at least 18 shipments of off-spec cargo at a low price, but the govt has also been forced to buy five additional shipments of better-quality coal via emergency tender at US$ 142 per MT.

Why was a company hired to provide coal if its financials aren't strong enough to withstand fines for selling glaringly off-specification goods?

This has raised concerns in power and energy circles about whose interests the government is protecting. The contract has at least THREE clear bases for termination. You can read what they are in the @TimesOnlineLK report.

"The problem is that, because of these unlimited fines, if by chance the company says, ‘I’m bankrupt, there is nothing I can do’, we might be able to sue them and recover the fine later, but where do we get coal from then?” he maintained. “We will have no coal.”

This week, Bimal Ratnayake provided insight into why the contract wasn't cancelled despite glaring violations. He said the tender was done properly, but admitted that lab tests have proved the generation of electricity from the coal was low.

LCC ordered 25 shipments of coal (1.5mn MT) from Trident for the 2025-2026 season. Delivery was scheduled to have been completed by April 23 this year. However, Trident only just unloaded its 13th shipment, when it should have been the 19th.

Trident has now been charged penalties totalling US$8.1mn for three shipments out of the 12 that have been unloaded at Norochcholai. Its contract, however, has not been terminated—neither for selling off-specification coal nor for consistently delaying supplies.
