He warned against politicization and urged independent, transparent inquiries with international cooperation to restore public trust and deliver justice to victims.

Aswasuma is a good scheme. It has issues in selection criteria, data collection etc and those should be fixed. But a good social protection scheme should exist to protect the poor and vulnerable during a crisis. Increase of such allowance is the correct thing to do.

These are idiots dabbling with a burning death. In Nigeria , mass casualties due to similar incidents is commonplace. If we are not to descend into that level, Police should check videos, arrest those involved and charge them. These types should not have voting rights.

Residents rush to collect fuel spilled from an overturned bowser on the Badulla–Colombo main road at Puwakgahawela yesterday. The bowser, carrying approximately 33,000 liters of fuel, overturned due to a reported mechanical failure, causing a large spill across the roadway. Locals were seen arriving with containers to salvage the fuel, while traffic in the area was disrupted.

Needs a bit of intelligence to understand. They were not MP’s then also this is the NPP not JVP. Also parliamentarians need to be paid so that the tax payers can hold them responsible. If one is not paid fr the job then there’s no obligation to perform or to hold them to account. This will also ensure that MP’s hv a livable wage & do not need commissions from airlines & kick backs frm foreign investment to survive. 🤪

If this calculation is accurate this is very unfair & unjust. According to the IRD then some are more equal than others. Are there grounds to challenge this in courts? Also is it the govt policy? The very govt which wanted to abolish pension, privileges & perks fr MP’s as there was so much of public resentment against these extravagant perks on tax payers money while the people suffered. @anuradisanayake @HMVijithaHerath @Dr_HariniA @SunilHandun_LKA @NalindaJay #lka

Why do MPs pay ~ Rs.7,500+ in APIT (income tax) while others pay Rs.55,000+ for the same salary? ⭕️ MP Ramanathan Archchuna has publicly shared his Parliament salary slip for March 2026, stating that the public should be aware of the earnings received by Members of Parliament. ⭕️ According to the document shared by the MP, the gross monthly salary and allowances amounted to Rs. 415,169.93. After deductions totaling Rs. 19,308.71, the net salary credited to his account was Rs. 395,861.22. ⭕️ One of the clear differences comes from APIT. For a gross salary of Rs. 415,169.93, anyone working in the private or government sector would typically pay Rs. 55,000+ in taxes, but MPs pay only around Rs. 7,500+. The reason is that the government at the time has effectivitly creating a different tax structure for MPs. So, how is taxable income calculated when it comes to MPs and higher-ranking government officials? ⭕️ The new 36% maximum APIT income tax system came into effect in January 2023, and MPs initially paid taxes on their income just like any other taxpayer. ⭕️ However, in the very next month (February 2023), the IRD introduced an amendment related to non-cash benefits. This was designed in a way that significantly favored MPs: under the amendment, only 25% of their vehicle, fuel, and communication allowances are considered taxable. ⭕️ As a result, MPs’ tax liability dropped from around Rs. 76,000 to about Rs. 17,000, while virtually nothing changed for regular taxpayers. ⭕️ With the 2025 revision of the tax code, particularly the elimination of the 12% tax bracket, the tax liability for MPs was further reduced to around Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 7,500, while others earning a similar income continue to pay over Rs. 55,000. we have talked about this in the past. old post: x.com/numberslka/sta…

MP @RajapaksaNamal so glad to hear you speak against corruption. Hope this is genuine. The public are definitely against corruption so you are on the right track. Yet while your regime was in power you guys were known as the most corrupt govt that Sri Lanka ever had. That was the perception that even brought about the NPP govt into power. Still Kapila Chandrasena your relatives statement that 60 Mn of kick back money in commission was given to your family & the Krrish tower guys accusations that 70 Mn was given as commission again to you hasn’t helped your cause. Then again Daisy Achchi loosing her memory before she could hv cleared the mystery of the land case all hv unfortunately gone against you & the family. So the general public is skeptical & it has become a joke when you wax eloquent on these issues.Sri Lankan voter now is very discerning. You need to do a clean up act. Integrity in life is everything. It pays. Model yourself after leaders like Lee Kuan Yew if you want to go far. @Media_NR #lka
