Chronically lapsed tweeter, but have stuck around for the reading + haphazard news monitoring (when the algo lets me, that is ...) Also still writing, designing and drawing––and reporting when I can ... asja.org/member/kelly-d…

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Very few people appreciate what America lost when we lost newspapers. Just being able to sit down every morning in silence and peruse news, opinion, sports, advice, recipes, interesting human interest stories all in one place was such a pleasure. The Internet has never produced anything that comes close.

Read @RebeccaSolnit and absorb that hope is not a bird in the sky you hope lands near you, it’s an active orientation. You find it in the care for someone else or something else outside of yourself. It’s bigger than you. It’s an act of cultivation. Rub two sticks together.

Really appreciated this by @StephenMarche re: Alice Munro, tho have some quibbles w/ end. Nicely captures the horror & bewilderment I also felt Sunday + the many Qs still spinning in my head. But also has lots more food for thought re: human nature, Cdn culture, et al. Recommend

For the @TorontoStar I wrote about the implications of the Alice Munro revelations, and what it says about Canada's unique ability to endure conspiracies of silence. thestar.com/opinion/how-di…

Resharing this post on Juneteenth because well, I’m a Black woman who is trying to open a romance bookstore here in Portland, Oregon. We’ve been opened for seven months and it has brought me a whole lot of joy. I hope that you’ll consider sharing and/or donating ✨

I’m so excited (and very nervous 🫣) to announce that the “Bring a Grand Gesture Books storefront to Portland, Oregon” GoFundMe is live! Please share, donate, and politely harass your friends about it. I want this so bad 💕 gofundme.com/f/bring-grand-…

I get that editors don't control budgets, but they have control over the empathy they express, as well as the scope of work they assign. You shouldn't expect the same level of work from a $400 story as you got from an $800 piece, but in my experience, the workload stays the same.
Katy Kelleher@KatyKelleher

Pieces that I was paid $2k for three years ago, I'm now getting $800 for. And pieces that I was paid $800 for? $400. And you know what? Editors aren't nearly apologetic enough about that.

📖 The 'Longform' Podcast Told the Story of an Industry: "More so than any individual interview or moment, Longform's greatest gift will be its archive. Its 12-year run chronicles the media landscape in a more defined way, perhaps, than any other outlet." defector.com/the-longform-p…

@AdultingADHD Yes! My neurodivergent son used to do this a lot, too, when he was younger.

Paths forward: publish stuff that makes readers come directly to platforms you control; depth of engagement and habit matter; reduce churn; niches are your friend; commodity is your enemy; meet people consuming news ambiently where they are and find a way to the above.

Been wanting to inject a bit of context into the WaPo discussion this week. An important note is nearly every publisher has experienced similar precipitous declines in audience since 2020. No sugarcoating!

New (w/ @ealini): So many aspects of our financial lives – some tax credits, social assistance, health benefits, etc. – are not indexed to inflation. That's a big problem when inflation hits a four-decade high. theglobeandmail.com/investing/pers…
