There was a time not long ago when China was hailed an economic miracle and its young people raring to go. But a sputtering economy has led to increasingly bleak views of the country’s future. We look at two new pieces of research that offer some insight: bbc.com/news/articles/…

China’s move to scrap tariffs for almost all African countries opens up access to one of the world’s largest markets. It could support export earnings in the short term, particularly in agriculture and mining. But the underlying trade imbalance remains, with Africa largely exporting raw materials and importing manufactured goods. Last year, the trade deficit with China widened to about $102 billion. As @wangarikebuchi notes in the @BBCWorld, zero tariffs on unprocessed exports do not address this imbalance and can reinforce it. The opportunity now is how countries use improved market access to strengthen local production, diversify exports, and move up the value chain. Bangladesh goes to the polls in its first election since the July 2024 uprising. This is also the first time in decades that the vote happens without either of the nation's two dominant political figures, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia. Follow us live here: bbc.com/news/live/cd03…

.@JeffBezos one of the defining stories of our generation is how China is edging out the US, a battle felt most poignantly here in Asia. I've spent my whole career chronicling this, work that can only be done on the ground in these countries. Our work matters. #SaveThePost

The man who killed Shinzo Abe and sent shockwaves around the world will soon get his verdict. There is little question to Tetsuya Yamagami's guilt – he himself has admitted to the crime – but what punishment he deserves has divided public opinion in Japan. bbc.com/news/articles/…

bbc.com/news/articles/…

Hands up all those who think @BorisJohnson is well placed to lecture anyone else on upholding standards & admitting mistakes.  As I said this morning on @bbcr4today “it’s clear that there is a genuine concern about editorial standards and mistakes. There is also a political campaign by people who want to destroy the organisation…Both things are happening at the same time”
