On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, joined staff this morning to celebrate the invaluable contributions of women across the Commission. “Women are at the heart of the African Union’s work and progress. Their leadership, dedication, and resilience continue to drive our mission forward,” he said. The Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment across the continent, stressing the importance of implementing key continental frameworks that protect women’s rights and eliminate violence against women and girls. He @ymahmoudali also highlighted the link between gender equality and the AU’s 2026 theme on water and sanitation, noting that women and girls often bear the greatest burden of water collection and face heightened risks where sanitation systems are inadequate. “Let the African Union continue to lead by example—building a workplace rooted in dignity, respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.” Read Statement in French @ au.int/en/speeches/20…

Africa has spoken with one voice at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in Belém, Brazil and the world has listened. Ethiopia extends its heartfelt gratitude to the African Group of Negotiators for their unanimous endorsement of Ethiopia’s bid to host COP 32 in Addis Ababa in 2027. We are grateful for the opportunity that the Conference of the Parties is giving us to spearhead the collective effort to tackle one of the most daunting challenges faced by humanity. We are honored to be entrusted by the global community with such an important responsibility. This recognition reflects confidence in Ethiopia’s leadership in climate action and its capacity to host major global events. Ethiopia remains fully committed to delivering a robust and meaningful outcome and inclusive COP 32 that advances collective action against climate change. Building on the momentum of the Second Africa Climate Summit, Ethiopia will continue to champion Africa as a continent of solutions and a committed partner in the global effort for a sustainable future.

The new African Union Commission leadership has officially taken office today. The Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and 4 Commissioners were sworn in during a historic handover ceremony. @AU_DARBE and @GGGIAfrica rolled out the pilot gender-responsive climate finance training under the Transformative Climate Finance Program (#TCFP) under the AU Green Recovery Action Plan (#AUGRAP). The event started today (28 October) and ends on 30 October 2024 in Addis Ababa 🇪🇹
