@KyleCrabbs Nice catch Kyle! Love your analysis. Do you have that data for all drafted players? Would be interesting to see how much the Dolphins deviated from the avg for other teams in this draft. Is there a correlation between college starts and health or NFL career longevity?

Combing through common trends for 13 draft picks takes a minute...so forgive me if I'm late to the party. But put this one on your future "Sully" data point for prospects. 🔗⏬

@LouStagner How are the benchmarks calculated? I wouldn’t expect a scratch player to consistently 2-putt 9/10 putts of those starting distances. I know you have to mix in 1-putts and 4-putts.

This putting game is GOLD. How often are you three putting? This is something amateurs get really frustrated with. Everyone three putts, even tour players... but how often should you actually expect to? After we look at the data, I've got a putting game you can use to benchmark yourself. THE DATA Three-putt % from 35 feet: ▶️Tour pro: ~7% ▶️0 index: ~23% ▶️5 index: ~30% ▶️10 index: ~35% ▶️15 index: ~40% ▶️20 index: ~46% Three-putt % from 25 feet: ▶️Tour pro: ~3% ▶️0 index: ~11% ▶️5 index: ~16% ▶️10 index: ~19% ▶️15 index: ~23% ▶️20 index: ~27% Next time you three putt from 35 feet, don't beat yourself up. Even scratch players three-wiggle nearly one out of every four tries from that distance. Look how good tour pros are! Speed control is the absolute key. 10 HOLE PUTTING BENCHMARK GAME Here's a simple putting game for the practice green. You'll play "10 holes." Pick a new starting location and a different hole each time. After your first putt, keep putting until you hole out. Go through your full routine on ALL putts. Starting distances for your first putt, in this order: 20 feet 35 feet 25 feet 40 feet 30 feet 20 feet 35 feet 25 feet 40 feet 30 feet HOW TO SCORE Track your total putts across all 10 holes. Goal is to beat the benchmark for your target handicap. TARGET BENCHMARK ▶️0 index: 20.86 putts ▶️5 index: 21.76 ▶️10 index: 22.42 ▶️15 index: 23.10 ▶️20 index: 23.74 Say you're benchmarking against a 10 index... If you finish in 21 total putts, you're gaining 1.42 strokes with your putting. ▶️22.42 - 21 = 1.42 If you take 23 total putts, you're losing -0.58 strokes. ▶️22.42 - 23 = -0.58 Play this game every time you practice. Write down your score. Average your last 5 games. Trend how you're performing. (Data from @ArccosGolf)

@LouStagner If anything, the player’s card should be the check on video scoring. Their score should be ready for them to sign in the tent after the round and they use their card to make sure they don’t have a discrepancy.

Making players on the PGA tour maintain a paper scorecard is ridiculous. ShotLink tracks every shot to the inch, walking scorers log every stroke in real time, and TV cameras cover play from multiple angles. The Tour already knows every player's score with more precision than a scorecard could ever provide. The paper card is the least accurate record of what happened on the course. And yet it's the only one that legally counts. That's not golf. That's clerical idiocy. De Vicenzo lost a Masters because of a clerical error. So stupid. "Tradition" isn't an argument. We used to be able to carry as many clubs as we wanted. We used to have stymies. We used to not be able to clean the ball on the green. Etc... Rules evolve when the reasoning behind them does. "Player accountability" is a red herring. Players still call penalties on themselves. Integrity does not live in making sure your playing partner wrote down a number correctly on a scorecard. Obviously, amateurs and lower level tours without ShotLink and walking scorers still need manual scorekeeping. Different context, different rule. But on the PGA Tour, where every shot is already logged to inch-level precision before the player even reaches the scoring tent, the paper card is ceremonial at best and a DQ landmine at worst.

Can we get rid of these archaic scorecard rules? It’s literally 2026. They can track the ball’s path and spin rate yet this dude has to fill out paperwork every hole. What are we doing.

@C_Wallace259 @LouStagner For sure. The governing bodies need to decide what they want the professional game to be. The USGA could skip the rollback and just partner with OEMs, architects, investors to build 20 pro-tuned courses. 20 more TPC Sawgrass variants

@kenmendonca @LouStagner Launch monitors and organized data collection and analysis. Turns out, golf always was, whether Young Tom Morris knew it or not, a game of proximity. Rollback fans pine for the days when you could lock up guys like Galileo.

The "imagination and creativity" argument doesn't hold up. Fred Ridley says golf used to be a game of "imagination, creativity, and variety." What does that actually mean? That players used to curve the ball more? That they hit more creative shots? Here's the problem... if you roll the ball back, elite players aren't going to suddenly start shaping the ball more. They'll still optimize for the lowest score possible. That's what they do. That's what you would do if you were playing for tens of millions of dollars. Curving the ball costs distance. Costing yourself distance will tend to cost you money. Players know this. They have launch monitors and decades of strokes gained research telling them exactly what works. Rolling the ball back doesn't change that math. They'll still hit the shot that gives them the best chance to score. And here's something most people don't realize, distance was actually MORE valuable per yard in the 1980s than it is today. The USGA's own research found that the scoring value of an extra yard of driving distance was at its highest in 1983-85 and declined over the next 30 years. Players weren't hitting more creative shots in the 1980s because the game rewarded creativity. They were optimizing with the tools and knowledge they had back then. The tools and knowledge they had back then were rudimentary by today's standards. We have MUCH better tools (trackman, etc..) and better knowledge today. Our knowledge and understanding have evolved. You want players to curve the ball more? Rolling back the ball won't do it. Plant more trees. Design holes that demand it. Create situations where the optimizer says, "the best play here is a draw with driver around that tree line." The irony is that many in the rollback crowd who want more "shot shaping" also seem to be in the "chop down all the trees" crowd. You can't have both.

“Until recent years golf has been a game of imagination, creativity, and variety. The game has become much more one dimensional.” Fred Ridley spoke about Augusta Nationals full support of the golf ball rollback during his press conference introduction.

@hutch_golf @Top100Rick It’s probably more like a lengthening of the bridge from Instagram novices to the PGA Tour. This sits in between and gives hopeful players a chance to make money to pay for qualifiers and guys who just missed out a second chance to build themselves up.

A Pro Golf Tour…for Content Creators? Are you interested in this? Is this doomed to fail? The big news in the social media world is Grant Horvat and the Bryan Bros forming a golf tour for social media influencers. Before you write it off, keep in mind these guys have MILLIONS of followers. Generate millions of views. Have more fans than your average PGA Tour player. The winner will get a million bucks. I’m not saying it’s a success yet. But imagine if ten years ago I told you that people would watch normal great players golf. Just dudes. For thousands of hours. And that these dudes would make more than many PGA Tour players. You never would have believed it.
