@Oliver_S_Curry @robsica Thanks for your interest. Because mutations, natural selection and genetic drift are happening all the time in all species, no species stays the same. The book "Understanding the Tree of Life" explains the full rationale behind the article. amazon.com/Understanding-…

@robsica I get the point, but if one animal has stayed the same for 1m years, and a close relative has evolved a range of extra adaptations (ie solved more problems) isn't the former more primitive / less sophisticated?

Understanding the Tree of Life a.co/d/7iFpTtJ My book is out - Cambridge University Press. amazon.com/Understanding-… Written for a general audience, but scientists will find it interesting too. My argument: it’s misleading to think of humans as a recent lineage.

@NKWhiteman Well said. Crisp and Cook 2005 Tree stated this argument very well. FYI I have a book submitted and accepted by Cambridge University Press on tree thinking addressing these and similar problems.

@TonyPannWBAL That would be a huge flock of birds, extending many miles. No reason for large groups of birds to be moving in that direction this time of year.

Just like the oriole we caught this morning, we are flying home today! The whole team worked so hard to make this trip a success and we are already excited to return in May for even more exploring. #proyectocalandria #puertoricanoriole
