@Marikacobbold That's a relatively new thing. We swam a lot in the Dart when in our teens, and called it "going down the dart"

I've lived in the UK all my adult life but some things I still find most peculiar, such as calling perfectly normal swimming, "wild swimming." Swimming in water that isn't a chlorinated soup in a basin, is still just good old swimming.

UNISON is one of the UK's largest trade unions, with 1.3 million members How often do you see general secretary Christina McAnea in the media (social media or mainstream media) arguing for workers' rights and pay and conditions, in comparison to other major trade union leaders?

I speak to many doctors in my line of work. They come from across the political spectrum and from a range of specialties. One of the most sobering things I've learned from them is the extent to which medical schools do not always teach students about the principles of evidence-based medicine. Few of those I speak with knew, for instance, that a doctor's expert opinion, though valuable, is lowest on the hierarchy of information in EBM. I've heard doctors say they were never required to learn how to read a scientific research paper. Another, and related, troubling insight I've encountered is the extent to which DEI requirements and instruction have displaced traditional medical education, including units on biology and chemistry. DEI has also led to lower standards in admission, testing, and graduation. Med schools are very concerned about "identity representation," even when this comes at the expense of rigor and merit. There is a real generational divide within the medical field right now, with older doctors, liberal as well as conservative, expressing concern about the entry of young, ideologically-driven, not-always-competent physicians into the field and remolding it to mirror a university social justice seminar. This is bad for patients, bad for the medical profession, bad for hospitals, bad for insurance companies, and bad for the integrity and trustworthiness of science.

Fascinating discussion with @neiltyson . Here's one surprising admission from Tyson, starting at 53 minutes. He described how "girls" have certain "features that were manifest" to him. These were all ornamentation (makeup, jewelry, long hair), and "boys'" features were less ornamentation, and short hair, different clothes, and muscles (a result of a cultural norm, going to the gym). Without these cues ("100% of which" were things each sex "chose," like breast augmentation, which women get so that they can "be female for you") he would not be able to detect the sex of people who are sitting down. At least, he said that those kinds of visual cues (he made some kind of exception for facial hair and baldness) are his "only cues" to sex. If his sex-detection mechanism is truly this poor, then it's highly unusual among mammals. We mammals are excellent sex detectors, and this is of course important for survival and reproduction. Humans are not an exception to this, although we do rely relatively heavily on visual rather than olfactory cues. Interestingly we bias our sex detection toward "male," because men are more often a threat to both sexes. (Being able to detect another's sex is especially important to women, who are at an extreme strength disadvantage and at a higher risk of sexual assault, but this did not seem to factor into Tyson's views about protected spaces for women.) Humans are generally not aware of the cues on which we rely to discriminate the sexes, but we are extremely accurate. Of course the body size and shape are strong cues, but we can tell sex even from faces that are devoid of any hair or makeup cues, and when the rest of the body isn't visible. There is lots of literature on this. Here's one example. researchgate.net/publication/12…
