Nestle just lost 413,793 KitKat bars. Someone stole them off a truck heading from their factory in central Italy to Poland, about 1,300 km away. Roughly $1 million in chocolate. The truck, the bars, all of it, just gone. A European Parliament study puts cargo theft costs across Europe at €8.2 billion a year. That works out to about €2.5 million worth of goods disappearing from trucks and warehouses every 24 hours. The industry group TAPA tracked 157,421 cargo thefts across 129 countries between 2022 and 2024. Only 6% of those included how much was actually taken, and that 6% alone added up to €2.7 billion. The real number is way bigger. Germany gets hit the hardest. DHL's own data shows that a truckload is stolen every 20 minutes there, costing roughly €2.2 billion a year. The fastest-growing method is "phantom carriers," where criminal groups register fake trucking companies with forged documents, show up at warehouses with legit-looking paperwork, load the cargo, and drive off. No weapons, no break-ins. Just forged IDs and a clipboard. The German Insurance Association logged 88 phantom carrier cases in the first seven months of 2025, matching the total for the previous year. Food is the most-stolen category in Europe, accounting for 10-20% of all cargo thefts. Chocolate is a top target because it doesn't spoil, everyone wants it, and it sells fast on unofficial markets. 20 tonnes of Nutella and Kinder Eggs were stolen in Germany in 2017. A crime ring that moved 287 tonnes of Swiss chocolate worth $8 million over the course of 2014. 20 tonnes of Milka were taken from an Austrian factory in 2019 using forged pickup papers. Timing makes this one sting. Cocoa went from about $2,400 per ton three years ago to over $12,600 in late 2024. Prices have dropped to around $5,000-$6,000 in early 2026, but that's still double the historical average. In Poland, where these bars were headed, chocolate retail prices jumped 32.6% last year according to EU data. The product is worth stealing right now more than at almost any point in the past decade. Nestlé says each bar has a scannable code that routes back to the company. Decent tracking. But when €2.5 million in cargo disappears from European supply chains every single day, 413,793 KitKat bars are a rounding error.

They call it “Saala size!” Only one female prison warder thought necessary to ask me to do it—once. She summoned publicly a day after my admission to prison. I went over and greeted her. She told me: “Saala size!” like 4 times. I asked what it meant. She told me to squat. I did. End matter. She didn’t ask me to do it again. She was testing me. When I was signing out, after Court granted me bail (God bless the Judge who granted me bail), the prison warder remarked that I had not given the prison authorities headaches. She was right. I generally don’t give people headaches. I merely hate injustice. And the guys who locked me after torturing me on 7th January 2025 were M7’s rogue soldiers in a Kangaroo military tribunal at Makindye—it wasn’t prison authorities who were merely executing a fake, illegal and politically motivated military detention order—they had no power over. I hope LUZIRA prison can organize a visitation room (like Kitalya Mini Max Prison does) where visitors interact with inmates while seated in a dignified manner. Otukol Samuel, a Member of Parliament and Director in both Samix Uganda Ltd and Zedkol Financial Services, Odap Francis, former Chief Administrative Officer, and Wamburu Willy, Acting Chief Financial Officer of Namisindwa District, and Osire Ezekiel, Director of Zedkol Financial Services, for causing financial loss, theft, and conspiracy to defraud, at the Anti-Corruption Court. Mr. Odap Francis and Mr. Wamburu Willy, during June, October, and November 2019, processed payments purported to be staff loan deductions, to companies that had not provided any services to the district in the sums UGX 82,530,413 to United for Development SACCO, UGX 202,483,413 to Samix Uganda Ltd, and UGX 210,430,890 to Zedkol Financial Services. This action was contrary to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Public Service, which required payment of loan deductions to a single deduction code managed by the Uganda Consumer Lenders Association (UCLA). Hon. Otukol Samuel and Mr. Osire Ezekiel withdrew the money from the companies’ accounts upon receipt and utilised it. The said companies were not licensed by the Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority (UMRA) to provide financial services; they were not members of UCLA; and they did not provide loans to the staff of Namisindwa District Local Government. The court convicted Mr. Odap Francis and Mr. Wamburu Willy on three counts of causing financial loss and two counts of conspiracy to defraud. The court convicted Hon. Otukol Samuel on two counts of theft and two counts of conspiracy to defraud, while Osire Ezekiel was convicted on one count of theft and one count of conspiracy to defraud. The court will sentence the convicts on April 1, 2026. The matter was prosecuted by Emily Mutuzo Sendaula, Senior State Attorney, before Her Worship Asiimwe Ester.#ODPPUGANDA
