Two weeks ago I was hitch-hiking at Donner Summit after a failed backcountry ski trip. Nathan’s CHP cruiser rolled up and I thought, here we go, I’m about to get harassed by the cops. Nathan rolled down the window and asked if I was all right. I leaned in and told him I was ok, and gave him my story. He asked if I wanted a ride, and I gladly accepted. In the next 45 minutes we talked, laughed and shared stories. He told me about his wife and kids, his time working in San Jose, and how he loved working up in the mountains away from the city. When he dropped me off, he gave me his personal phone number and told me to call him at 6:30 if I hadn’t gotten a ride - he would pick me up after he got off work and drive me to family in Sacramento. I texted him later in the day to tell him that I had been picked up and thank him. He texted back: All's well that ends well. Glad you made it. I have found myself thinking about how I could repay his kindness in the last couple of weeks. About bringing him a 6 pack of beer, or writing the CHP to commend him. I thought about looking him up when I was in the area and offering to buy him dinner. I thought about becoming his friend. And then I read in the newspaper today that he had been killed on duty this weekend - hit by a car while investigating another accident. And I was, I am, crushed. Buying him a 6 pack or dinner seems so small in scope now. I am sharing this in an effort to broaden that scope. To repay him by inspiring others to be good. Be a good person. Be kind to strangers. Go out of your way to help them when you can. The time for this is now, not later. Later may never come. The measure of your life is your impact on other people. Make it count. Nathan Taylor was a good man. He was kind, and giving, and he wanted to help. He challenged my prejudice against the police. He inspired me to be a better man. You made a difference, Nathan. Thank you. Credit : Paxton Brewer edited for clarity

Tim Conway fell down the stairs twice as fast during rehearsals so Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett weren't ready for how slow he'd fall during the taping. They had no choice but to turn from the camera and hide their laughter 😂

On May 25, 1986, America did something that still feels impossible today. More than six million people stepped out of their homes, their routines, and their differences — and reached for the hand of a stranger. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, a living human chain stretched 4,152 miles across the country. It crossed bustling city streets, quiet small towns, endless farmland, scorching desert, and winding rivers. For fifteen minutes, the entire nation was physically connected — heart to heart, hand to hand. This was Hands Across America. It wasn’t organized by politicians or corporations. It belonged to ordinary people. Parents holding toddlers. Grandparents standing tall beside teenagers. Factory workers, farmers, teachers, nurses, veterans, and kids who skipped school just to be part of it. Some stood under blazing sun. Others felt cool ocean wind. All of them shared one purpose: to stand against hunger and homelessness and to say, out loud and in public, that no one in this country should be forgotten. Yes, celebrities like Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Kenny Rogers helped draw the spotlight. But the real power came from the millions who showed up without cameras pointed at them. People who believed that showing up still mattered. People who believed that unity wasn’t just a slogan — it was something you could actually do with your own two hands. The event raised millions for food banks and housing programs, but that was only part of the story. The deeper impact was emotional. For fifteen minutes, a divided nation proved it could still come together. It reminded Americans that compassion could move faster than fear. That ordinary people, when linked together, could create something bold, visible, and unforgettable. Many who were there still remember the feeling of that hand in theirs — warm, steady, human. In a time when it feels like we are being pulled apart by every force imaginable, that memory still burns. America once reached out and literally held itself together. And the truth is… we can do it again.

Entonces me desplomé. 🚑
