@plzcallmechrist I am guilty on Lord of the Rings. I love the stories but cannot get into the prose style. I have read the Hobbit more than once. Never read Blood Meridian.

@shesbonky Xer - I hauled half my book collection to the computer lab (dialup was a thing, but I didn't use it), and wrote "The Uses of Telepathy in Contemporary Sci-Fi and Fantasy" as a term paper for a linguistics in science fiction class from 12am to 4am off the top of my head - A.

@SandyofCthulhu I would call it a red flag if anyone openly announced that RP was "therapy". That conjures images of overwrought women screaming at trees and behaving similarly badly at the table and calling it "therapy" when you ask them not to do it.

When I was working on the Age of Empires series, people would come up to me all the time and say they were educators and congratulate us for making an "educational game". I always gave them the same answer. "I put real history into the game because I genuinely think it makes the game more fun for the players. But it's not for the education - all i care about is the fun. If real history helps, I'm for it." If someone gets therapy by playing a roleplaying game more power to them, but you can also get some pretty great therapy petting a purring cat on your lap.

@SandyofCthulhu There a very few obligate herbivores. The koala is one. Most are opportunists and will munch on protein if the occasion presents.

Every herbivore is able to eat meat. Plants are much more difficult to digest than meat - look at the complicated systems herbivores must use to do it - they need multiple stomachs (ruminants), reprocessing waste (rabbits), or long-term fermentation. Almost any herbivore's digestive tract will easily handle eating meat. I've seen a cow eat a chicken and everyone knows chickens eat everything. The difficulty herbivores have is that they are designed to escape predators, not to hunt them down. They don't have the physical ability in most cases to capture prey (the cow who ate the chicken cornered it in the barnyard). Thus, while a pigeon can absolutely eat a dead sparrow, it's hard for the pigeon to kill that sparrow in the first place. Carnivores have much simplified digestive tracts, which is why our torsoes are so much narrower than an herbivores. Humans are sometimes an exception because we're so successful we become obese, but our innards are, unsurprisingly in between carnivore and herbivore. We have about 26 feet of intestines, which might seem like a lot, but a deer of equal size has 65 feet of intestine! A lion only has about a 6 foot tract. Ours is longer because we do eat plants, but we are super-picky about our plants. We eat fruit, nuts, and the very least fibrous leaves, stems and roots. We can't eat grass, most tree leaves, pine needles, etc. Anyway. I look forward to our New Squirrel Masters forming packs to hunt us down and feast on us like we deserve.
Massimo@Rainmaker1973

California squirrels are eating rodents in broad daylight. In California’s Briones Regional Park, researchers observed a startling new behavior: California ground squirrels, typically known for eating nuts and seeds, are now hunting, killing, and consuming voles, a smaller rodent species in their habitat. A study in the Journal of Ethology documented 74 squirrel-vole interactions, with 42% involving squirrels stalking, pouncing on, and eating voles. This behavior, observed almost daily, marks the first recorded instance of widespread carnivory in this species. While squirrels have occasionally eaten insects or bird eggs, actively hunting warm-blooded prey is unprecedented. Student-recorded videos show squirrels chasing voles, restraining them with forepaws, biting their necks, and consuming their flesh or organs. The behavior may stem from a vole population surge—nearly seven times the state’s ten-year average—prompting squirrels to exploit this abundant protein source. Squirrels of all ages and sexes participated, suggesting a potential lasting adaptation. It’s unclear if this carnivorous trend will continue once vole numbers normalize, but the discovery reveals the surprising adaptability of even well-known animals. ["Squirrels Are Displaying ‘Widespread Carnivorous Behavior’ for the First Time in a California Park, New Study Finds." Smithsonian Magazine, 2025]

🔥🚨DEVELOPING: Gen-Z and Millennial Americans have started a growing trend of attending “Laughter Clubs” where you can go meet up with other adults to laugh on command with each other to help deal with stress. This practice started in 1995 but seems to be gaining a lot of traction with the two youngest adult generations.

@SandyofCthulhu Food insecurity! One of the measures was simply replying to the question of what was for dinner with "I don't know". By that measure, *I* am food insecure. I don't know half the time what exactly is for dinner. I do know I will be having it though.

Clear back in the 1980s a national news team decided to do an exploration of Hunger in America and went to Appalachia, rural George, etc. looking for hunger. They found none. Zip. There WERE and ARE malnourished kids, but it's not because there's a lack of available food - it's because the adults in their lives don't prepare it for them. Kids with dysfunctional adults have it tough, but the solution isn't "provide more food" or at least that's the shortest-term solution imaginable.
Sassafrass84@Sassafrass_84

I'm seriously confused on how children are still going hungry in American schools? Our schools in Florida give every single child breakfast and lunch free. They even give kids baskets of food to take home on the weekends when there is no school. During summer they send food baskets. Why are children still going hungry? (Yes, I know this is on the parents. But our schools take care of these children. So why isn't this happening in other states?)

I’m probably going to regret posting this when I get doxxed and these psychopaths come for me and my family, but it’s just too important not to say. And I’m not highlighting this topic out of a particular preference for Jewish people either, so don’t bother trying to accuse me of that. Until a week ago, I hardly ever even commented on this issue. Too toxic for me. But this kind of rhetoric is abhorrent about any race, and dangerous to us all. Whether it’s White Christians in South Africa, Black people in Mississippi, or yes even Jews in Israel.

TW: Logic, facts, actual research Calling people Nazis as a means to silence them or shut down their arguments is a terrible thing to do, and I’ve publicly criticized the left doing so for years. Ironically, there are actual Nazis now actively supporting the Democrats. Many of these people call THEMSELVES Nazis. They’re people who say they LOVE Hitler. People who consistently state that the Jews must be eradicated. They’re voting for Democrats, promoting Democrats, and campaigning for Democrats. Trump and MAGA are at WAR with this group of “right-wingers” who spew that garbage, but Democrats still call MAGA the Nazis. 🙄 I want to be VERY clear. I am not using Nazi as just an insult. I’m not that foolish, and I’m much more creative. If I only wanted to insult them and delegitimize their views, you’d be laughing right now instead of shaking your head. I’m using Nazi LITERALLY. These are people who openly believe Jews are “subhuman.” Just as I’ve been warning: the actual Nazis are here, and when you finally realize it, nobody is going to listen. People are too desensitized to the word to care. It’s the boy who cried wolf. You fools. If Democrats win the midterms with their support, the country WILL succumb to Nazism/Fascism, and everyone who falsely and hyperbolically described Trump and MAGA that way will be directly to blame for it. The lack of leadership within the Democratic party will serve only as a trojan horse to carry these monsters into power. Besides, the left predominantly (and misguidedly) agrees with them on this one issue anyway. This is NOT an exaggeration. I’ve been predicting this for YEARS. It’s horrifying to see it actually taking place. MAGA is the last and only cohort remaining that willfully opposes this Jew-hate thinly veiled as “Israel criticism,” and you’ll never convince the left to see it. I wonder, will any Democrats ever recognize their error in saying “Fuck Israel, Free Palestine”? If you hate AIPAC because they spend $3 million per year manipulating our politicians, why don’t you hate the top 100 lobbies that spend 10-30 times more money doing the exact same thing? If you’re so against the billions we send to Israel, why don’t you care about the billions we send to Egypt, Jordan, and the DOZENS of other non-Jewish countries around the world? I’ll do you one better: I’m ALL for scaling back foreign aid, and completely against ALL lobbying, but you will NEVER catch me throwing my lot in with the hypocrites who hijacked those issues to promote their anti-Jew propaganda. Below is an example of one account that interacted with me last night. His initial claim was that he’s “critical of Israel’s relationship with the US.” It took me less than a minute of searching to find the posts pictured below. I’ve interacted with upwards of 1,000 people just like him since just last weekend. Every time I search an account like his, this is exactly what I find. Wake up America. The Nazis are at the gates, and it’s not MAGA.
