Meta allowed my single character Instagram username (@i) to be stolen through an exploit in their platform, dating back to February this year.
My email, password and phone number were never compromised — yet somehow a hacker was able to gain access to my account 🧵

I pay for Meta Verified. Never really got much out of it day-to-day, but I figured the security layer was worth it.
Then this week’s hack made me change my mind.
How it worked:
→ Pick a target username
→ VPN to match their region
→ Ask Meta’s AI support to “link my new email”
→ The AI obliged. No password, no MFA, no human
Reset links rerouted, accounts sold on Telegram within minutes. Textbook prompt injection - the #1 LLM risk on OWASP for two years running.
What actually protected accounts? MFA. The hackers admitted on their own sales channel that the exploit failed against any account with it enabled.
The blue check protects you from impersonation. Not from access.
I personally use Authenticator app on both Instagram and X. IMO passkey ≥ biometric > authenticator app > email > SMS, so I actually have some work to do.
Make sure you set it up too. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

@dibujandocarros @kornbuilds Don’t have any contacts with reps but I think getting unbanned would be easier to find a rep for than for this meta ai exploit. I’ve seen people do unban requests on social media forums and on telegram before

@kevins @kornbuilds Something else entirely. I created an account for my business about 2 weeks ago, and it was immediately banned. Like, I didn't even get the chance to do anything, and it was banned. Meta verified support has been useless.

my instagram (@ korn) was stolen overnight via the Meta AI exploit and was subsequently disabled.
it was Meta Verified, facial scan verified, and had 0 TOS violations.
the account is the sole source of my income.
i spent 6 hours trying to get human support and meta's support AI gave me 4 broken links in a row. we're at the point where one AI stole it and another can't fix it, zero humans in the loop anywhere.
does anyone know how to get in contact with meta support about this?
it is absolutely ridiculous that a trillion dollar company allows an exploit like this and doesn't even address it.

@dibujandocarros @kornbuilds If it’s due to this meta ai exploit I would probably just wait tbh. If it’s some other ban then I would look for someone with a meta rep that can help you get unbanned

i want to not overclaim but afaic this is the single worst security vulnerability in social media history, for any platform, period
i don't think people are giving this the weight it deserves. it's not generically bad. the scope was ~any non-2FA accounts. as in, billions hackable

My Instagram account (@zv) was compromised and disabled overnight despite being Meta Verified, identity verified, and having no history of policy violations.
I’ve spent hours trying to get support, only to be sent in circles through automated systems and broken help resources with no way to reach a real person.
It’s concerning that accounts can be lost this easily while legitimate users struggle to get human assistance when something goes wrong.
If anyone has a direct contact or effective path to reach Meta support, please let me know.

Three days ago my two letter Instagram username “kv” got stolen using this exploit and Instagram support will not help me recover it. They were able to bypass 2fa and swap the username off my account without giving me any warning. @instagram

Today Instagram had this massive exploit where hackers were just stealing rare handles left and right. Hundreds of accounts gone. People losing handles they’ve owned since 2010, some worth hundreds of thousands. I own a few rare ones so I was actually stressed watching this happen in real time, which I haven’t been in years. Obama White House account got hit. These aren’t some random new accounts, these are verified, locked down accounts and they still got compromised. The thing is the exploit is so simple it’s almost funny. Attacker goes to Forgot Password, says their account is hacked, turns on a VPN to match the target’s location (which now you can find on the about section of the page). Instagram’s AI support flow asks them to verify with a selfie. They grab a photo from the target’s profile, run it through an AI video generator to make an animation of the person’s face moving around, upload that to Meta’s AI as proof. And Meta’s AI just accepts it because it can’t tell the difference between a real selfie and an AI-generated video of someone’s face . Once verified they change the email to theirs. Password reset link goes to their email. They own it now. 2FA gets bypassed somehow in the process but honestly I don’t know exactly how, just that it did. Point is even locked down accounts went down. Then you try to recover your account and you’re talking to a chatbot that has zero ability to help. You can’t escalate to a human. You’re just stuck. Your asset is gone and there’s no one to call. The whole thing just highlighted how stupid it is to automate account security without any human in the loop. One AI fooling another AI while there’s literally no person anywhere to catch it. Meta took hours to even acknowledge it while accounts were getting stolen every minute. Now thankfully it’s patched but I don’t think it will be the last one. Stay safe!

As I'm sure you've all seen by now, nerds have been exploiting Meta's AI agent goop to steal Instagram accounts.
The Instagram AI agent for support could be convinced to reset the credentials to other users accounts by asking nicely and do a super gnarly kickflip on a skateboard, or something, I don't know.
Everyone on social media was freaking out. The trending posts on Xitter was people being all like ERRMERGERD ME INSTAGRAM ACCNT WAS STOLEN. It also resulted in some celebrities having their accounts stolen. One stolen account showed some rapper named Lil Tracy (?) messaging 14 year olds, or something, despite being 18 at the time.
All the big cybersecurity nerds were discussing it, yelling about AI, taking the opportunity to meme Zuckerberg (as is tradition).
The AI exploit thingy has apparently existed for awhile, a few months apparently, but that is kind of just gossip. I haven't seen any solid proof of that. Meta supposedly fixed the issue, but some people are saying you can still ask nicely and do a super gnarly heelflip and Instagram goop gives you account resets.
