@michael_hoerger I knew you were thinking along the same lines. From my perspective, athletic identity for him was everything. Career-ending injury with zero buffer. Linville’s spillover hypothesis.

“It’s sad, and I want to go back to how things were before”: a qualitative study of young people’s experiences of living with long COVID 😡Damm it….. wake-up and recognise these Covid-19 victims! A large and still growing group! 🚨They’re not “just tired” or “anxious,” young long COVID victims are being gaslit and dismissed while their entire lives are shattered: identities destroyed, school gone, friends vanished, futures stolen… and society still calls it fake! ➡️Small Swedish study that still needs wide attention! ➡️"When interviewed in depth, children and young people (CYP) living with long COVID described that they have an unpredictable and disabling condition that restricts them from living as they did before and as their peers of the same age do," ➡️"Long COVID is experienced as affecting all major areas of life, including identity and independence," ➡️"The CYP have met dismissiveness and lack of knowledge but expressed a strong desire for educational and healthcare personnel to validate their experiences and provide meaningful support," ➡️"In schools, this means implementing support already existing for other groups of students," ➡️"In healthcare, it means providing an empathetic and validating approach that implements assessments and interventions that do exist and help to deal with the uncertainty of living with long COVID." ‼️So, young people with long COVID describe stumbling in the dark through unpredictable, disabling symptoms that shatter their identities, education, relationships, and leisure, leaving them profoundly sad and desperate to return to life as it was before, while sceptical and dismissive responses from others only deepen their isolation and burden. And let’s be very clear, they’re NOT only CYP, and they need our help! #AvoidSars2 #AvoidReinfections bmjpaedsopen.bmj.com/content/10/1/e…

Yall remember Kylin Hill? This brother was a major turning point in the flag's removal. In June 2020, #MississippiStateUniversity running back Kylin Hill tweeted: "Either change the flag or I won't be representing this State anymore & I meant that .. I'm tired". Hill, a #Mississippi native and one of the top rushers in the #SEC at the time, issued this threat directly in response to #Governor Tate Reeves' initial hesitation to support a new flag design. His stance sparked a massive wave of support Pressure on #Leadership: His tweet went viral and put immediate pressure on state legislators and #university officials to take a definitive stand. Widespread Support: Other athletes and coaches—including those from #OleMiss—publicly backed him, as did the SEC and #NCAA. Resulting Change: Lawmakers passed the bill to retire the old flag just days after Hill's ultimatum. Hill was later honored by his hometown for his role in the historic change. While Hill stayed and played for a portion of the 2020 season, his threat is widely credited with accelerating the legislative process to remove the Confederate emblem. With the dismantling of the black voting rights in the South Black athletes in the SEC could really redistribute the pain with over $470 million!!! Just saying…

Long-term cardiovascular impact of COVID-19 among hospitalised and non-hospitalised populations: a narrative synthesis review 🚨IMPORTANT and I warned you: 1. “COVID-19 can lead to persistent cardiovascular complications in both hospitalised and non-hospitalised patients.” 2. “These findings emphasise the importance of ongoing cardiovascular surveillance for ALL COVID-19 survivors.” This Australian 2026 narrative synthesis reviewed 71 observational studies (Dec 2019–Jan 2024) on long-term cardiovascular sequelae of COVID-19 in both hospitalised and non-hospitalised adults. ➡️Findings: • Hospitalised patients experienced significantly more frequent and severe symptoms (palpitations, chest pain, arrhythmias) and higher rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke and thromboembolism, • Both groups showed persistent cardiac abnormalities on echocardiography and cardiac MRI, elevated troponin/NT-proBNP, ventricular dysfunction and dysautonomia (e.g, postural tachycardia), even >24 months post-infection, • Non-hospitalised (“mild”) cases displayed mainly subclinical myocardial injury and autonomic dysfunction, with many still reporting fatigue, dyspnoea and arrhythmias at notable rates, • Vaccination status (reported in only 27 % of studies) was consistently linked to reduced persistent cardiac injury and MACE risk, • “Vaccination may mitigate long-term cardiac sequelae, highlighting its protective role beyond the acute phase of the illness,” • Limitations: heterogeneous definitions, inconsistent severity grading, short-to-medium follow-up in most studies, and limited stratification by hospitalisation status. ➡️Conclusion: 1. COVID-19 leaves lasting cardiovascular damage in every survivor, hospitalised or not, making lifelong heart surveillance essential for millions worldwide. 2. This review is silent on reinfections, yet real-world data since early 2024 show they drive cumulative heart damage. Ignoring them leaves the paper’s conclusions dangerously incomplete for today’s reality! #LongCOVID #COVIDHeart #AvoidSars2 #AvoidReinfections frontiersin.org/journals/cardi…

That prior on-land outbreak? --> 3 patients were main drivers of the outbreak --> 33 secondary cases --> *** 4 waves *** of transmission How did it spread? --> "the route of infection in secondary cases was possibly through inhalation of droplets or aerosolized virions" This is what we're trying to stop. The article is so clear that prolonged close contact is not absolutely necessary and that it's spread through the air (distance and duration do matter, but it's so far been presented that only long durations and close contact is how this is spread.) The steps WHO and others are now taking (and the outbreak being on a cruise ship where everyone is isolated...), are doing a good job of limiting the potential for future waves.

@AP @cv_cev Testing positive *without symptoms* should be ringing major alarm bells…🚨 …because it confirms a distinct possibility of ASYMPTOMATIC transmission. And that’s a LOT harder to manage than when people are only infectious with symptoms.

This is another crucial point from the 2018 Argentina outbreak which may have significant bearing on what unfolds in the coming days with the cruise ship outbreak… “The window of infectiousness was 48 hours BEFORE the onset of symptoms and 48 hours AFTER the onset of symptoms.”

Lesson from Covid… by the time you realize that you need mandatory quarantines and mass testing… it’s too late for those measures to be fully effective. Waiting until people become symptomatic to test/ isolate is a bandaid on a hemorrhage.

So. We know that hantavirus has an IFR of 30-40% and airborne spread. What other pathogens are in the same bucket? Smallpox (IFR: 10-30%), MERS (~30%), SARS (~10-15%), pneumonic plague (~50%+). For reference, the IFR of the 1918 flu was 1-3%.
