What's a good retirement fund number to target? I certainly believe having $1 million (~₹9 crores) in liquid assets (bonds, FDs, mutual funds, equities, PPF) is a good sum to plan for retirement.

@san_x_m McKinsey works people hard all over the world. Lots of folks quit after a few years but with their experience go on to do great things and earning big bucks too. These people are driven and are not exploited workers.

His name was Saurabh Kumar Ladda. He was 25 years old. Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras. MBA from IIM Calcutta. CFA Level 1 certified. He joined McKinsey and Company as a junior analyst in August 2022. On Friday, February 23, 2024, he returned home to his apartment in Wadala, Mumbai, after a work trip to Ahmedabad at 10:30 at night. At 11:15, he jumped from the ninth floor. In his last phone call to his girlfriend, he spoke about the pressure he was facing on his project. Police recorded statements from his flatmates, family, colleagues and seniors. The official police investigation concluded his death was due to pressure at his workplace. He was 25 years old. IIT. IIM. McKinsey. Every milestone India tells its young people to chase. Today is International Labour Day. The day the world stops to ask what we owe the people who work. India has no law that limits working hours for white collar professionals. The Factories Act caps factory workers at 48 hours a week. For salaried office employees, there is no legal ceiling. Saurabh Kumar Ladda is not the first. He will not be the last. Follow for real stories India never makes headlines about.

@maa_bhaishiiH @labstamil Churches in the US cannot directly endorse a candidate but are allowed to endorse issues. They use this first amendment privilege to talk about issues like abortion and immigration etc. they are also allowed to be partisan like denying communion to certain candidates

Btw, in the United States, churches are technically legally forbidden to endorse or oppose a particular political candidate in an official capacity, failing which they can lose their tax-exempt status. Pastors are also not allowed to campaign for any particular political candidate and ask their congregation to vote for them. Church cannot use any of their resources for political campaigning. I am sceptical of the assumption that the Opposition Parties will face any negative impact from ensuring the failure of the Women's Reservation Bill. Genuinely don't think women at large care much about it. Simply because it isn't something that affects them much in any manner. I could be wrong. But it doesn't seem like an issue that invokes strong emotions in people either way. I could be wrong, of course.

There never was a time that our elections were free of freebies. TN in 96 - free TVs, free rice, free gold thalis (mangalsutra), free power to farmers etc Cbn lost to YSR because he didn't offer freebies but YSR did. Free power, free rice etc. Ktka was better and Modiji didn't offer free anything.

@dhume Quality of education in English is very poor. People in rural and semi rural areas lose creating unnecessary divide. But India needs one language. Perhaps Hindi but written in Tamil script might make everyone suffer equally

This is a good argument for Indians to learn Hindi voluntarily. But it downplays several real issues with the Hindi-imposition project: 1. It artificially privileges one linguistic group in the subcontinent over others. 2. Hindi represents a region that is (currently) economically and intellectually backward, especially compared to the South. 3. It is not the language of transnational science or commerce, or the language that most Indian elites reach for by instinct and habit. (Watch a video of Mukesh Ambani talking to his kids.) 4. Some of the most enthusiastic votaries of Hindi are also actively hostile to English, which naturally creates disquiet among many educated Indians across the country.
Śrutaṃ me gopāya@shrutammegopaya

The opposite argument is this It is important for all Indians to have a common “Indian” language as lingua Franca English cannot be that language though it can serve as a secondary lingua franca Among all the Indian languages Hindi is best placed to serve as lingua franca for a variety of reasons 1. It is widely comprehended by a majority of indians (even without “imposition”) 2. It is the only prakrit that has transcended a regional identity thanks to its spread as hindavi through medieval empires serving as medium 3. It represents everything that sanskrit has to offer in terms of intellectual / technical vocabulary while being easier to learn than sanskrit with a far simpler grammar / fewer cases etc 4. It has had a lot of work put into it in 19th and 20th centuries and has proved adaptable and resilient in the face of modernity unlike some of the more ancient southern languages that have regressed and turned more conservative (like tamil) 5. It is a v elegant language that is least diglossic among all indian languages. Resembles english in that respect

1/3 Had a serious conversation today with Archbishop Thomas Tharayil of Changanassery about the FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 and its impact on Christian institutions in Kerala. The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, introduced in the Lok Sabha yesterday (on March 25, 2026), proposes sweeping changes to India’s foreign funding laws. For Christian institutions, especially in Kerala, which hosts a historic and extensive network of Christian-run hospitals, educational trusts, and social welfare NGOs, the proposed changes have triggered significant alarm. The new bill tightens state control over foreign-funded organizations in several unprecedented ways: * Asset Seizure by a "Designated Authority": The bill creates a central authority empowered to take control of an organization’s foreign funds and physical assets created from those funds. If an NGO's FCRA license is suspended, cancelled, or not renewed, the government can seize its properties and even sell them, depositing proceeds into the Consolidated Fund of India. * "Deemed Cessation" (Automatic Cancellation): If an organization fails to apply for renewal, or if its renewal is rejected, its FCRA registration automatically ceases. It immediately loses the right to use any foreign funds or tied assets. * Expanded Personal Liability: Legal liability now extends beyond primary office bearers to include all directors, trustees, and members of the governing body or managing committee. * Strict Timelines for Fund Usage: The government will dictate strict timelines for receiving and utilizing contributions, preventing organizations from holding foreign funds indefinitely. These provisions have grave implications for democracy and freedom in India.
