Happy birthday salute to popular former Cubs star outfielder Gary Matthews. I had the pleasure of writing Matthews' life story: "They Call Me Sarge," in 1985. Matthews also was a key member of the 1983 NL champion Philadelphia Phillies and the MVP of that year's NLCS.

Sorry to learn of the passing of comedian Tom Dreesen. Tom was proud of his humble roots in Harvey, Ill. He became the opening act for Frank Sinatra and appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson dozens of times. A huge sports fan and reliable friend, Tom will be missed.

Larry Fitzgerald Sr. — the father of Arizona Cardinals Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald — passed away on Monday at the age of 71. Fitzgerald Sr. was a distinguished journalist and voice for Minnesota sports for nearly 50 years.
