@kleinkurt @thinkingwest Using the phrase "cultural Marxism" is an almost certain indicator the user has neither read any Marx nor understands any.

On a Boston layover around 1998, went to see Harvard. Had never been there. The bookstore had it very high on a top 100 list for non-fiction. Saw a student reading it on the bus ride back. Was later in Portland and Powell’s had a large stack, prominently displayed. Read it, thinking it was a legitimate history, an engaging book written by an accomplished professor. Took me some years to realize Zinn’s bias, that the book is a one sided, anti-American view through the lens of cultural-Marxism.

Some brief notes on the online discourse around the “racial” identity of a mythological character whose father was Zeus in the guise of a swan and who was said to have hatched from an egg. (Gift link below.)

@MattWalshBlog Yes, that's about right in my experience. There's a particularly vacuous brand of techno-optimists who can't distinguish criticism from pessimism.

I’ve learned that apparently if you have any concerns about AI at all, if you express any remote skepticism, if you’re even a bit worried about giving trillion-dollar Big Tech behemoths free rein to do whatever they want with Ai, then you’re a Luddite barbarian who hates progress

@clairlemon @robkhenderson I lean toward socialism to some extent, but don't trust government or bureaucracy. I despise the obscene excesses of wealth, but only because there are so many others who lack a reasonable amount of it.

It has never been more obvious that socialists don't actually care about working people, they just hate the rich.

My earliest memory of existential dread was when I was 5yo in the toy section of a store, looking at a toy thinking, “If I could get my mom to buy me that, I would be so happy.” But I remembered all my previous toys and how the happiness they brought me was fleeting and realized this new toy would be the same as would be all toys after it.

@DavidDeutschOxf @IMAO_ "Stasis is death"? Goodness, that's quite a claim. With all due respect, I assume that you're not a fan of Epicurus' take on ataraxia then. Instead, would you favor the 'pouring water into a sieve' approach, which never made anyone any happier as far as I can tell?

@IMAO_ Oh dear. That was a psy-op and you fell for it. That children stop playing with each particular toy and want a stream of new ones is not a defect in them. It is the same phenomenon as their not reading each particular book again and again and wanting a stream of new ones.

@KimDotcom You may be right (or not), but the odds a life-producing universe is possible are many, many orders of magnitude steeper than what you've indicated here. I recommend reading the first part of @Philip_Goff 's book 'Why' and John Leslie's book: 'Universes'.

Was the Universe designed? If gravity was 1% different we would not exist. The fine-tuning of all forces makes our existence possible. The cosmological constant is designed to allow the Universe. The odds of things being random is astronomical. The Universe was designed. Yes!

@ZubyMusic Many of the rich as well as wealthy organizations don't pay as much tax as they should because they 'offshore' their earnings. Remember the Panama Papers?

I'm amused by people who think rich people don't pay taxes. I don't even know where that idea came from. It's not just false, it's an anti-truth.

@robkhenderson One of the clearest examples of capitalism not being able to capitalize on a certain form of technological innovation. When the latter makes a certain form of exchange value obsolete, the established status quo declares it 'piratical' because it's powerless to do anything else.

@Markmanson FWIW, I think Epicurean 'ataraxia' (a state of contentment unbothered by desires) is worth cultivating. I'm certainly not the happiest person on earth, but it's worked well for me.

You cannot maximize happiness. Happiness is not a permanent state. It is a moment, a spike in a long, jagged line moving through time. The more you try to make it last, the faster it disappears.

My own title was, “If my friend Claudia is not conscious, then what the hell is consciousness for?” If Claudia is unconscious, her behaviour shows that an unconscious zombie could survive without consciousness. Why wasn’t natural selection content to evolve competent zombies?

“Death penalty is the ultimate cave man position” As opposed to giving Anders Breivik endless legal appeals to complain about getting a PS4 in his cell rather than PS5
Slazac 🇪🇺🇺🇦🇹🇼🌐@TrueSlazac

The death penalty is the ultimate caveman position, it brings no benefit to society over, say, life in prison, it just exists so society can feel righteous despite the very obvious issues that come with it

BREAKING: Divisive ANZAC Day “Welcome to Country” speaker Mark Brown celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk. He charges up to $4,500 per Welcome to Country announcement and sells a range of AI generated illegal ANZAC merchandise on his website. When challenged he told the descendents of Australian soldiers that they should ''know their place'' - that they do not truly belong to this land and country despite fighting and dying for it. Why should we elevate this guy to a position of high public prominence and honour in Australian public life when he supports the murder of his political opponents and shills illegal ANZAC merchandise for personal profit?
