On a Boston layover around 1998, went to see Harvard. Had never been there. The bookstore had it very high on a top 100 list for non-fiction. Saw a student reading it on the bus ride back. Was later in Portland and Powell’s had a large stack, prominently displayed. Read it, thinking it was a legitimate history, an engaging book written by an accomplished professor. Took me some years to realize Zinn’s bias, that the book is a one sided, anti-American view through the lens of cultural-Marxism.

Few books have been as destructive on the minds of the American youth as this one

@clairlemon @robkhenderson I lean toward socialism to some extent, but don't trust government or bureaucracy. I despise the obscene excesses of wealth, but only because there are so many others who lack a reasonable amount of it.

My earliest memory of existential dread was when I was 5yo in the toy section of a store, looking at a toy thinking, “If I could get my mom to buy me that, I would be so happy.” But I remembered all my previous toys and how the happiness they brought me was fleeting and realized this new toy would be the same as would be all toys after it.

@KimDotcom You may be right (or not), but the odds a life-producing universe is possible are many, many orders of magnitude steeper than what you've indicated here. I recommend reading the first part of @Philip_Goff 's book 'Why' and John Leslie's book: 'Universes'.

@Markmanson FWIW, I think Epicurean 'ataraxia' (a state of contentment unbothered by desires) is worth cultivating. I'm certainly not the happiest person on earth, but it's worked well for me.

You cannot maximize happiness. Happiness is not a permanent state. It is a moment, a spike in a long, jagged line moving through time. The more you try to make it last, the faster it disappears.

@RichardDawkins There would appear to be a very significant difference between functional consciousness and experiential consciousness. LLMs can only be said to have the former.

My own title was, “If my friend Claudia is not conscious, then what the hell is consciousness for?” If Claudia is unconscious, her behaviour shows that an unconscious zombie could survive without consciousness. Why wasn’t natural selection content to evolve competent zombies?
